Maggie thought she was married to an earl . . . but it seems that her late and unlamented husband lied to her from the day they met. Now-penniless and stranded in London-she has thrown herself on the mercy of the real Lord Warwick. What's a counterfeit countess to do?

Edward, the Earl of Warwick, desires only to get rid of the beautiful woman who arrived at his house with no less than fourteen trunks, a younger sister, a maid, and a very large cat. Her preposterous explanation is of no importance-but her late husband held the clue to the identity of England's greatest traitor, a clue the Foreign Service must get at any cost. Edward will have to guard her night and day-but he cannot guard his heart.

Edward, the Earl of Warwick, awakened to shouting in his home. Upon locating the source he met Maggie. She claimed to be the widow of the Earl of Warwick, just arrived from America. Edward gently informed Maggie that her late husband, Lawrence Henshaw, had never been a titled gentleman. In fact, Lawrence left England just in time to avoid the hangman's noose. Lawrence had been a traitor to the Crown. Edward informed his superior, in the Foreign Office, about his unexpected visitors and was instructed to keep an eye on Maggie at all times. After all, Maggie could be a spy or Lawrence may have left her something of importance to England. ...................... Maggie Peabody Henshaw had no idea that her countess title had been yet another lie by 'The Scoundrel'. This bit of news implied that she was now penniless, stuck in London, and responsible for the welfare of her sister and maid. She had no choice but to accept the Earl's help. Maggie needed to marry well, and quickly, if they were to survive. Edward persuaded Maggie to stay at Warwick Manor. Her story was to be that she had married the old Earl shortly before his death and was staying with the new Earl for awhile. During that time, she could search out a husband. She did not know that Edward was only helping her so he could keep an eye on her. ...................... Both Maggie and Edward were attracted to one another. However, Edward was already pledged to Lady Fiona in Yorkshire and Maggie had several men vying for her hand in marriage. Then the attacks on Maggie began... ......................... ***** Readers, that is as much as I can say without giving anything vital away. This story is full of romance and suspense. The author, Cheryl Bolen, has added some enticing sub-plots that kept me glued to the book. Within this pages you will find danger, betrayal, many suspects, romance, and some delightful secondary characters that I pray to see have their own stories told someday soon. ....................... Once again the author has proven herself to be one of the best authors in the Regency Romance field today! No one can resist a novel written by Cheryl Bolen. Her writing talents charm all readers. Highly recommended reading! *****

This is a sweet book. I very much enjoy Cheryl Bolen's style of writing. There is intrigue, deceit, a little bit of mild heat and love of course! She blends everything into a story that is very engrossing. I finished this book in just a few hours because I could not really put it down. Lady Warwick comes to England to live in her dead husbands home, only to find that she is not the Lady Warwick. She was married to The Scoundrel. However, Edward, the current Lord Warwick, allows her to stay in his home when he finds out who The Scoundrel was. There are spies, cutthroats and even Almack's. Great story. I know I will be reading the next in the series.

I loved this book. It was entertaining and sweet. The story is about Lord Warwick, who thinks he's happy and engaged to a young lady who has just lost her mother therefore their engagement can't be announced till she is out of mourning. Then his house is descended upon by "Lady Warwick". WHAT???! He isn't married who is this woman? And she has the nerve to order his servants around, demanding accommodations. She informs him that she owns the castle and has come home to live. He then sets her straight and tells her that she has married a liar. So fearing she will be put out she does what any self respecting woman would do, she cries. Of course he can't throw her out into the night so he says she can spe nd the night...along with her younger sister and fat, hairy cat! So amusing! The story goes on to get even better when his boss decides she might be a spy and he must keep her close at all times to prevent her from consorting with enemy. Ms. Bolen outdoes herself with this book. There's romancing, sizzling lovemaking, murder, & lots of surprises.

I do love a good Regency romance, and Cheryl Bolen writes a good one. This story about Edward (a counterfeit Earl who works for the Crown) and Maggie (a counterfeit Countess) involves a mystery about a secret document and an excellent knowledge and description of the English countryside wherein the mysterious hijinks and relationship adventures take place. Regency courtships usually follow prescribed societal rules and this one is no different, except that there are some lovely slip-ups during Edward's and Maggie's unusual courtship...and, of course, their happy ever after is reached despite the adventures, hijinks and slip-ups. It was fun reading this romance, as well as rewarding. I really like this author's storytelling ability!

This is the first of Cheryl's books that I've read. The premise grabbed me - a widow finds out that she isn't actually a countess after all and is dependent on the kindness of the current earl. The underlying mystery of who wants to harm Maggie, the heroine, is very well done. It kept me reading, anxious to find out what was going to happen next. I was just as surprised as the characters at who the villain turned out to be. There's also an unexpected twist near the end of the novel that made my eyebrows raise through the roof. Looking back, there were plenty of clues, but I didn't catch them at the time. All of the plot points were resolved very well. With that said, I was not that fond of the heroine. She is very dramatic and speaks in a great! deal! of exclamation points! By halfway through the book I wanted to smack her and tell her to calm down and speak in a nice, normal tone of voice. I much preferred her sister, Rebecca (who has her own book). I also thought there ought to be a little more self-reflection for both the heroine and the hero after their first intimate encounter. It wasn't an event either of them planned or planned to repeat, and they just kind of went on as if nothing happened. I would have liked to see a little more of the emotional aftermath of that incident. I plan to get Rebecca's story next.
