As a mother of a gay 17 year old and the wife of an Army soldier, this hit home in two very personal ways. Good read. I was shocked, literally, when it was over too soon.

I really enjoyed this read. It was short, perhaps too short, but so much to work on. James, the main character, is half a generation older than myself and I too have a lost love. I feel for him, I understand his motivations and the one-night stands never finding the love that he's lost, never able to find the love that has been lost because lost love can never be found again. Yes, a different love, perhaps just as strong, but never the first love when all emotions were at a peak and when life was young.
It encouraged me to think of those that I've lost in my past, one special man in particular who lost his live in '93, and pulled out my box of memories that I have had hidden for years.
So much was said in this short 11 page story, but so much more was not said, and that was what made it special to me.
... and even more interesting that I noted was the author J.M. Snyder is a female (the pronoun "SHE" is used in the 'about the author' on the final page). Image shattering!- gender reflects sex, but love is love without gender. I was impressed.

Honest, good, even though short I felt for the character and his loss. Love is blind and its loss is heart breaking.

Normally I don't find these shorter stories worth my time, but this one is a nice read. It says a lot in a few pages!

This short story is a well written homage to former friends & partners.
This short story would be worth your time while waiting between connecting flights.

Overview
James, middle-aged, is given to one-night flings with younger men in whom he searches for someone he lost long ago. A random comment by his latest catch draws his mind back to the past, to a boy he once loved so fiercely, a boy drafted and sent to fight in Vietnam. A boy lost in the war. A boy James has never forgotten. WARNING: This is a very sad little story. It's also one of my best IMHO.
