    Those ARE excerpts--from operas, that is

    While opera music does include singing by its very nature, much of what is sung in opera is not referenced as a "song." An aria is a sung solo usually characteristic of, well, a particular character in the opera story. Opera composers, especially in the past 200 years, continue to be very fond of creating musical motifs that represent the characters in the story. When you have more than one singer delivering a scene, arias turn into duets, trios, quartets, etc.--all of them are more "opera-like" names for these excerpts then "songs."

    Regarding length, keep in mind that most excerpts from operas are long by today's commercial standards. Be glad you didn't get the full versions of each opera. Think of each excerpt as a scene from a musical movie or play. The length and sheer overdone drama of operatic works is not a palatable taste for most people, but to really appreciate the genre, you probably do want the entire excerpt, instead of a portion of the work.

    Disappointed!

    Perhaps I missed something, but nothing in the description led me to understand that I'd be getting a CD of song clips and not entire songs!
