Younger readers (8-14) who like fantasy will enjoy this book. If they're not too critical, adults will enjoy it, too! The characters are well-drawn, if somewhat stereotyped. The situation is intriguing -- wouldn't we all like to discover a door into another reality -- and the magic is not overdone. I will probably watch for the sequel. This is not great literature, but it was a fun afternoon's read.

IF you enjoy fantasy, adventure, and excitement this book is for you. Much of it is about an 11 yr old boy, but features 3 other kids as well. There are some misspelled words and poor punctuation, but not enough to interfere. A teacher

It is written more for a younger audience, but is a wonderful story for any age. Mr. Newman is able to create within his words a world and group of characters that you come to know and like. His story is well written and one can easily become engrossed; losing track of the time while the story unfolds. I look forward to his next book in this series.

Even though this is a children's fantasy, I enjoyed the story. The first couple of chapters are a little slow, but once they get into "Camelot" things really take off. I would say this is a great book for nine to sixteen year olds. There are elves, dwarves, witches, and wizards. The book has a very happy ending too. I recommend it!

This book about Ben and Casey is very adventurous. I think that the second book should be more adventurous then this one. The gnomes werent in this one but the elves arent evil. I would recommend this to 3rd grade and up. Ben should be like a wizard but doesnt know it. Casey sure sounds beautiful. I think Meg and Joey should be elves and they think they're normal people.

Way too much mundane detail, starting to feel like it was written by a teenager or amateur novelist.

Overview
While spending the summer with their grandparents on a remote farm in South Carolina, Ben Alderman and his sister Casey uncover a hidden world of magic; a world their grandmother is secretly visiting. It is a world where elves and dwarves are locked in mortal combat against a witch who is trying to free the last surviving wizard from exile. The witch has been defeated once before but with the combined power of the wizard, no one will be able to stand against them. Much to Ben's dismay, he learns that he is the one foretold in the ancient elfin prophecies to bring about the downfall of the witch and save this exciting new world from destruction.
