They were life long friends, but last year out of the blue Colleton County Sheriff's Deputy Dwight Bryant proposed to North Carolina Judge Deborah Knott. She accepted in what she thought would be a marriage of convenience between two older people. Instead love adds passion to their dependable relationship.

Married for one year, the judge and the deputy take Amtrak to New York on a belated honeymoon. The couple is staying at an Upper West Side Apartment belonging to his sister-in-law Kate. Deborah also has a special bronze sculpture small enough to place in Dwight's bag as a gift from dying Jane Lattimore to her daughter photojournalist Anne Lattimore Harald. Anne's husband NYPD Lieutenant Sigrid Harald swings by to pick it up as a party is in swing in the apartment next to the one the honeymooners are staying in. When Sigrid and Deborah enter Kate's apartment, they find the corpse of Sidney the super on the balcony and the sculpture missing. Unable to resist Deborah and Dwight assist Sigrid on the investigation.

The latest Deborah Knott whodunit (see Christmas Mourning) is a delightful refreshing tale as the North Carolina couple finds their Manhattan honeymoon interrupted by murder and robbery. The mystery is clever with roots to 1942; while part of the fun is the lofty attitude of urbane New Yorkers to the country bumpkins as the sophisticated urbanites assume that the entire South lacks six degrees of separation. Fans will enjoy this fine entry enhanced by Margaret Maron having Sigrid (see in Past Imperfect and Fugitive Colors) as the lead investigator.

Wonderful blend of two mystery series!

Three Day Town is the latest in Margaret Maron's Judge Deborah Knott series. Deborah and Dwight, her husband of about one year, are finally getting away for a mini-honeymoon in NYC. As part of the trip, they are bringing a parcel to be delivered to the daughter of one of their friends. They are staying in an apartment owned by the wife of one of Deborah's relatives. The first night there, they attend a party next door and come home to the body of the building's superintendent in the apartment. Now, the story gets interesting! The investigating police officer is Lt. Sigrid Harald, the protagonist from an earlier Maron series. Ms. Harald is an acerbic, somewhat humorless detective with a past tragedy in her life. She is also the granddaughter of Deborah and Dwight's elderly friend who asked them to deliver the parcel. The contents of the parcel are somewhat shocking and may be connected to the murder. There are all kinds of interesting characters woven throughout this story. Well to do society types, art lovers and artists, service workers in the co-op, and New York's finest all play a part in this mystery. One of the interesting things about this book was seeing Deborah work away from her home base. She and Dwight contribute to the solution but not with much cooperation from Ms. Harald. The taciturn detective's character becomes more likeable as we learn more about her, but she is the opposite of Deborah's open, earthy personality. I have to say that I decided to go back and read the older series after reading this book. I asked the author if future Harald books were planned and she said no but that there would be appearances in future Knott books. This book has plenty of suspense and the characters are well done. One of Ms. Maron's strengths is the believability of her characters. They add to the story and don't distract the reader with useless red herrings. As usual, the interplay between Dwight and Deborah is wonderfully romantic even in the midst of a murder. I have to say that I will be glad to see them back home in the next book. I just love the family dynamics and the southern ambiance in these books. Can't wait for the next book in the series!! (ARC provided by Netgalley)

Good quick read

This is my favorite author. Her Deborah Knott series is set in North Carolina ( my home state). I look forward to every new book. This book ties both of her series together. Keep them coming!

Freat Book

I highly recommend this book. Margaret Maron is a fantastic writer.

Okay

Very diappointed in what appears to be a marketing ploy by the writer to get people to go back and purchase her previous series of books and to update an old character (Sigrid Harald). THe plot was shallow and never really brought any finalization to the crime, suspects or storyline. I started reading Margaret Maron in the early 80's with "One Coffee With" but you don't take a character who would be in her 60's and now say she is in her 30's and has southern roots. Shame on the author.

Not one of my favorites

I have enjoyed the other books in the Deborah Knott series, but this one did not impress me. There was too much Sigrid and not enough Deborah and Dwight. This book gives the impression that the author has written a crossover novel in an attempt to interest dedicated Judge Knott fans in the Sigrid series.

let down in the way the book ended.

Highly recommend this book

I always enjoy Margaret Maron's books and this one is right up there with the best.

Recommended by my 93 Year old mother

My mother and I have shared a love of mysteries since I was around 12 and read early Sayers and Tey's "Brat Farrar". This is one of the series we look forward to. As my mother put it, "It is always interesting to have the Judge travel and see a new place through her eyes, but this was really good because I know New York City so well."

I have to agree. The way the relationship between Deborah and Cal keeps evolving is interesting to someone who has stepchilden.

A Great Mystery

I just love this series and I wait patiently for my annual visit with Dwight and Deborah, and this time they are in New York on a long delayed honeymoon. They are enjoying what the city has to offer when Deborah finds the super¿s body on their balcony; they become involved in tracking down a killer that is hiding among the faces they have met. This book opens and draws you into the story from the opening line, and never lets up as it continued to the closing moments. The mystery was such that it kept me guessing and I enjoyed the interactions between the Bryants, the people they come across in the city and the lieutenant who is handling the murder case. This is the best one yet in a series that gets better and better each year and I look forward to more exciting adventures with Deborah Knotts in this wonderful and thrilling series.

Good murder mystery

It kept me interested and guessing the whole book. I like Deborah and Dwight. I think their must have been other books written with them and I would read them.
Deborah and Dwight after a year of marriage are finally going on a honeymoon to New York City by way of train. Leaving Dwight son with brother and sister-in-law. They are staying in an apartment for a week while renter is out of town.
Dwight is second in command of the Sheriff's Dept. in Colleton County, North Carolina. Deborah is a Judge.
Their first day in New York they are invited to neighbor's party in the next apartment. They where asked by a distant relative to give her daughter a package since she lived in New York. But the daughter was out of the country for a month and left her daughter's phone number. So Deborah called and told her about the package. Sigrid Harald called back and asked what was in the package her grandmother sent her mom.
So Deborah opened it and it was a statue of bunch of men making love. So Sigrid arranged to come pick it up that night and meet them at the party. When Sigrid and Deborah went back to their apartment the door was open and the statue gone. Dead building super on balcony. with door opened. In the bathroom Deborah was last to use it before they went to party and seat was up and she knew others had used it. Turns out a lot of people kept going in and out of that apartment.
Everytime I thought okay maybe its him someone else dies. The super Phil's wife has mental problems and she stills little shiny stuff useually animals. Phil is always returning them. She never leaves the building and doesn't talk to others but does clean some of the apartments.
The building has a old elevator that the doorman is sopposed to run at all times, but because their was a party lots of people crowded in hallway ended up lot of people came into the apartment to use the bathroom.
Easy read murder mystery. Likeable characters. I was given this ebook to read in exchange of honest review from Netgalley.

plot twisting murder mystery

Three-day Town was a suspenseful, plot twisting murder mystery. The plot contains the perfect setting, witnesses and suspects. Maron shares this story from the POV of Deborah and Sigrid. Judge Deborah Knott is feisty, smart and loves shoes. She is excited to be spending a week in New York with the love of her life, Sheriff's Deputy Dwight Bryant. After celebrating their one year anniversary they are finally getting a honeymoon. Dwight's sister-in-law owns an apartment on the Upper West Side and has arranged for them to stay there in January. Cold or not these southerners are looking forward to a week in the big city. Deborah is asked to deliver a package for a distant relative. Once in New York she makes arrangements for the package to be picked up. Before it can, they discover the package has been stolen. To make matters worse, there is a dead man in their apartment. Ironically the package was intended for the mother of Lt. Sigrid Harald of the NYPD. Sigrid is assigned as lead homicide detective. Together they try to solve this murder and recover the package. The story that unfolds is believable and compelling. I enjoyed the colorful characters in this novel. The suspects and witnesses were unique and added intrigue to this complex murder case. Author Margaret Maron chose the perfect setting for this crime. It paved the way for a multitude of possible suspects, scenarios and an array of witnesses. I was completely immersed in the tale she masterfully painted. Three-Day Town is the seventeenth book in the Deborah Knott Mysteries Series. This book can be read as a standalone. I had no problems understanding any past connections. I look forward to reading more of this authors work. I want to thank netGalley and Grand Central Publishing for this ARC.
