Children's Literature
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to follow a tiger for a day? This book describes what a typical day in the life of a tiger is like. The tigers hunt, cool off in the water, feed their young, and stay away from enemies. This book describes in detail what it is like for the tigers to find food. The beautiful illustrations show the tigers in their natural habitat, and include many illustrations of other animals in the jungle. The back of the book contains a world map with a star on Southeast Asia where the tigers live. The back matter also contains many facts about the tigers, such as what time of day they hunt, how long they will live, and how much they weigh. Also included is a large foldout illustration of a jungle scene, which has on the back a pictorial glossary of each of the animals found in the scene. Young children can identify the animals in the book, and older children can learn about the natural habitat of the tigers. 2003 (orig. 1999), Soundprints, Ages 3 to 7.

K-Gr 4-Written like adventure stories, these books describe how a mother cares for her offspring in the wild. In the first title, a Nile crocodile watches as her eggs hatch and then carries nearly 50 babies to a nearby waterhole. The youngsters can find their own food, but they need their mother to keep them safe from numerous predators. In the second offering, a Bengal tiger looks after her three cubs, hunting for them, protecting them, and nuzzling and nursing them. The narratives are told simply but with some drama and are illustrated with colorful, detailed paintings. While animals are hunted and captured, there is no gore. The text is set over the artwork in boxes for easy reading. Each book ends with a brief page of facts and an impressive four-page foldout depicting its subject's habitat and some of the other indigenous creatures. Use these titles with beginning readers or even pre-readers in storytime to pique an interest in nature.-Susan Oliver, Tampa-Hillsborough Public Library System, FL Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
