Meet the Author

Dr. Michael S. Sweeney is a professor at Ohio University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, where he serves as director of the graduate program and teaches print journalism courses.

He has written a variety of books for the National Geographic Press, including God Grew Tired of Us, Brain: The Complete Mind, and BrainWorks. He also has published academically on the history of wartime journalism, and particularly on the methods and effectiveness of censorship in wartime. His first book, Secrets of Victory, about the American Office of Censorship in World War II, was named book of the year for 2001 by the American Journalism Historians Association.

He is associate editor of Journalism History, a quarterly academic journal published at the Scripps School.

Dr. Sweeney received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska, his master’s from the University of North Texas, and his Ph.D. from Ohio University.

He lives in Athens, Ohio, with his wife, Carolyn.

    Good if you know Nothing about the TITANIC!!!

    Did not reveal that it was National Geographic SHORT until after the purchase. Save your money for something more comprehensive. Barnes and Noble does not offer refunds.

    Absolutely not worth a nickel.

    The description leads you to believe theres actual pictures, not just a written account of the recent activities. This might be a good read but for a $1.99 you can subscribe for a month and get the real magazine with the story, pictures and everything fron Nat. Geo.

    Titanic april 14 1912 look at me for facts

    I am sutch a big fan of titanic! You know the back of it really went down in circles insted of going strait down. It split in the ken. Over 1,500 died with the titanic. The titanic is the greatest ship wreck. In the crows nest they did not see well so when they alrted them it was to late so it sank but if they had something good to see in it would of not sank. If over 5 or 4 apartmemts it sank but if just 4 or 5 it would not sink. There were not a lot of boats because the maker of it said it wold look cramped and it was over the law it could not have over 16 boats but after the titanic sank the law said you need as mutch lifeboats to save everyone. The news paper said the titanic arrived safely but when they found out it did sink they fixed the mistake imeadly. It was a tragic day for April 14 1912. Thank you for looking.

[repeated over and over again] -12:18 Carpathia: [to Titanic] Do you know that Cape Cod is sending a batch of messages for you? -12:18 Titanic: [to Carpathia] Come at once. We have struck a berg. It's a CQD OM [it's a Come Quick Danger - emergency - old man]. Position 41.46 N. 50.14 W. -12:18 Carpathia: [to Titanic] Shall I tell my Captain? Do you require assistance? -12:18 Titanic: [to Carpathia] Yes, come quick.
