This is Long¿s second publication (debut The Runaway Duke). This starts out as a Pygmalion story about a pickpocket that is transformed into a Lady. The only difference is this pickpocket turned lady truly is a Lady. Lily though razed a lady by her lady mother has fallen on hard times and has had to resort to picking pockets to keep a roof over head and food on the table for both herself and her little sister Alice. But when she¿s caught picking the wrong man¿s pocket, Gideon Cole, a upward and mobile barrister from London, comes to her rescue. To repay the debut she owes him, she agrees to help him make the woman that he wants to marry jealous enough that she will want only him and agree to marry her. However, along the way the two end up falling in love. And somewhere in there the story seams to veer off into a Pollyanna direction. I found it an enjoyable, but very predictable read. The characters, though sufficient in development, I found them lacing in originality. Over all the book I say was nice, but I think there is a lot of room for improvement.

This is the first book I've read by Julie Anne Long and it's a keeper! The story was great and the characters very easy to love. This is a book I could read again and again. I'm excited for more from this author.

I bought this one spur of the moment, and without really reading what is was about about. It was a really fun read. I fell in love with Gerard and Lucy. The secondary characters were all very well written to make them so interesting that there are a few that I hope the author will write another book about!
Romance lovers will love this book, I deifitely recommend it!

A few days later when Gideon saves the same thief from being hauled off to prison, he discovers that she's a girl, and a pretty one at that. Untrue to form, but desperate to get Constance's attention, Gideon launches an impulsive scheme to turn the guttersnipe Lily Masters into a lady whom he appears to be courting. (Lily resorted to stealing to keep her sister and herself from starvation, but they had been gently bred). So Lily cleans up beautifully; she's smart, charming, witty, resourceful, and turns Gideon's world on its head. To clear her debt with Gideon she promises to help him in his campaign to win Constance. She does and he finds himself engaged to Constance. But Gideon and Lily are both smitten and there goes the master plan!

To Love A Thief is Julie Anne Long¿s second novel; like her debut novel The Runaway Duke it mixes a perfect blend of romance and humour. Its magical and endearing, a treat for anyone that believes fairy tales can come true.

This was an enjoyable book. Chuckles along the way and towards the end of the book she introduced 2 aunts....these characters were funny. Laughed out loud at their comments. Would have been wonderful to have had them more throughout the book. Love a romance with lots of laughter.

I loved this book. this is the book for people that are true hopeless romantics. There is not a lot of hard core sex like a lot of romance novels. It is sweet and flirtatious with lots of sweet inuendos. The story is very cute and you can't put it down once you start. I will say that the first chapter or two was detailed and hard to follow for me, but once I got past that it was a great book. I just finished reading her first book too.."The Runaway Duke". That book was similar too this one in the sweet way it was written. I have to say that it was very good as well, but I still like this book " To Love a Thief" the best out of any romance novel I have read. I have only read about 20 so far. I also finished readin her other book "Since the Surrender" I did not like that one. Too much sex and chauvanistic attitudes.

Gideon Cole inherited something from his father that he could very well have done without. The overwhelming debt that his father left was eventually paid in full, one creditor at a time. Gideon is an excellent barrister, but after paying his father's debts, combined with the fact that he does not collect fees from many of his clients, he is not in a favorable financial situation. Gideon is obsessed with his 'master plan' and one important detail in that plan is wooing Lady Constance and making her his wife. Lady Constance's father is in a position to aid in the advancement of Gideon's political career, making her an even more attractive marriage prospect. He finds himself in competition for her hand with another suitor with a much fatter purse. Lily Masters picks pockets in order to provide food and shelter for her ten-year-old sister, Alice and herself. Though she successfully picks Gideon's pocket watch, he catches a glimpse of her. Her next attempt was not so successful and she is caught in the act. Gideon happens to be nearby and rescues her by buying her freedom from her 'victim' with his last thirty pounds, the very amount that he intended to use to purchase the townhouse that Constance was so very fond of. While Lily does appear to be an unlikely thief, Gideon deems that she could be extremely useful as the object of his attentions, thinking that Lady Constance will become jealous and find him more attractive. With that in mind, Gideon enlists the help of others in setting out to turn Lily into a real lady, placing her and Alice in residence with his Uncle Edward. This is where this book takes on a completely new life! Gideon has no idea what he is getting himself into with the likes of Lily and Alice and the two of them quickly begin to worm their way into his heart. Unfortunately, his dreams have been in place for so long in the form of his master plan, that he resists these threatening emotions. Ms. Long has written an excellent historical novel with TO LOVE A THIEF. These characters are charming and her descriptions of them, their personalities, and the surroundings are incredible. The relationship between Lily and Gideon is the very substance of every young woman's romantic dreams; the relationship between Lily and Uncle Edward is touching and incredibly heartwarming. Readers will be pulled into this book from the very start. I am sure that Ms. Long has a long, successful writing career ahead of her and I plan to get a copy of her first book, THE RUNAWAY DUKE, as well as all that will follow TO LOVE A THIEF. It is easy for me to recommend this book to lovers of historical romance; there will be no disappointments. Courtesy of Laurie/Romance Junkies

Part of his plan is to marry Constance Clary and use her father¿s aristocratic influence with the treasury and Gideon¿s success in court to become Chancellor of the Exchequer. Though he knows he competes for Constance and the treasury position with the wealthy titled Jarvis, Gideon will do what it takes including putting a down payment on an expensive London townhouse.--- Gideon catches nimble pickpocket Lily Masters trying to steal his watch, but she escapes. Later Lily¿s bad luck continues when jostled trying to pick someone¿s pocket and is caught. Gideon rescues her by ¿buying¿ her from her captor at the cost of his townhouse down payment. He feels she owes him and since she speaks like an aristocrat he decides to use her to make Constance jealous. However, when he brought Lily and her ten years old sister Alice into his life, Gideon did not realize how they would pick apart his heart and plan through love.--- Lily refreshes this pleasant Eliza Doolittle Regency romance though readers will agree with Gideon that she is a pathetic thief. The hero is interesting as he struggles with his growing feelings to his ¿guest¿ and her sister that runs contrary to his master plan while the sacrificing for her sister Lily is great counterpoint to the selfish Constance. Though the coincidence of her failing twice with Gideon there on both occasions is a stretch, fans will accept this happenstance as the catalyst to a wonderful love story.--- Harriet Klausner
