Overview

Don't open the door...

Bobbi Anderson and the other good folks of Haven, Maine, have sold their souls to reap the rewards of the most deadly evil this side of hell.

Something was happening in Bobbi Anderson's idyllic small town of Haven, Maine. Something that gave every man, woman and child powers far beyond ordinary mortals. Something that turned the town into a death trap for all outsiders. "Wonderful creeping terror . . . A great storyteller!"--The New York Times Book Review. (Occult/Horror)

Editorial Reviews

Christopher Lehmann-Haupt
''The Tommyknockers'' proves that Stephen King can do anything he wants to. We already knew he could grip us with good horror stories and so-so horror stories. Now he has shown that he can grip us with a lousy horror story as well. -- New York Times
Publishers Weekly
King's new novel, a numbing variation on Invasion of the Body Snatchers, offers its own best commentary on itself. Nearly one-third of the way through the 560-page book, protagonist Bobbi Anderson, a writer of westerns, describes what she has stumbled upon in her backyard to her friend Gardener, an alcoholic poet: ``It was a flying saucer. No self-respecting science-fiction writer would put one in his story, and if he did, no self-respecting editor would touch it with a ten-foot pole.. . . It is the oldest wheeze in the book.'' After the vampirish Tommyknockers in the spaceship have wrought their evil magic upon the inhabitants of Haven (Tommyknockers live on the blood of comatose humans circulated through mind-reading PCs connected to VCRs), the unfortunate townspeople have, it seems, ``become'' (the word, over-used and never explained, is King's) ``something else'' (the vague words are also the author's). The ``gadgets'' of the town ``become'' living beings that kill (there are marauding hedge cutters and Coke machines, Electrolux vacuums, Yamaha motorcycles and flying smoke detectors ) and The Tommyknockers is consumed by the rambling prose of its author. Taking a whole town as his canvas, King uses too-broad strokes, adding cartoonlike characters and unlikely catastrophes like so many logs on a fire; ultimately he loses all semblance of style, carefully structured plot or resonant meaning, the hallmarks of his best writing. It is clear from this latest work that King himself has ``become'' a writing machinethis is his fourth novel since It was published 14 months ago; the faithful readers not overwhelmed by his latest fictional ``gadget'' are likely to wonder, as poet Gardener does near the novel's end: ``What had it all been for? He realized miserably that he was never going to know.'' (November)
Library Journal
Yet another mammoth horror novel from King, this dark tale depicts a small town's fatal encounter with creatures from outer space. Events start with Roberta Anderson, a writer of Old West novels, unearthing a flying saucer on her remote wooded property. Five hundred pages later alcoholic poet Jim Gardener, Roberts's former English teacher, finds himself aboard the flying saucer in outer space. In the interval the creatures (Tommyknockers) destroy the citizenry of Haven, Maine. While this is not one of King's more original novels, it does have plenty of blood and guts, macabre humor, and a well-wrought realization of the New England countryside. No doubt King's legions of fans will demand it. BOMC main selection. James B. Hemesath, Adams State Coll. Lib., Alamosa, Col.

Meet the Author

Stephen King
Stephen King

Stephen King, the world's bestselling novelist, was educated at the University of Maine at Orono. He lives with his wife, the novelist Tabitha King, and their children in Bangor, Maine.

Biography

Fiction powerhouse Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland, Maine, in 1947. As a student at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, became active in political causes, and met his wife, the former Tabitha Spruce. In the early years of his marriage, King augmented his meager teacher's salary by selling short stories to men's magazines. Then, in 1973 he hit pay dirt: his novel Carrie was accepted for publication, and a major paperback deal provided the means for him to leave teaching and concentrate full-time on writing. Since then, the prolific author has never looked back.

Dubbed the Master of the Macabre for his domination of the horror genre, King has also written bestselling thrillers, mysteries, fantasies, novellas, and short stories, many of which have been turned into blockbuster films and miniseries (A partial list includes Carrie, The Shining, The Stand,, Misery, It, The Shawshank Redemption, The Langoliers, Stand by Me, and The Green Mile). He also has two works of nonfiction to his credit: a gorgeously crafted memoir/scribbler's how-to (On Writing) and Faithful, a chronicle of the Boston Red Sox' stellar 2004 season, cowritten with Stewart O'Nan. In 2003, he received the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

In between books, the indefatigable King performs in the Rock Bottom Remainders, a rock band that includes among its rotating personnel fellow authors Dave Barry and Amy Tan; attends as many Boston Red Sox games as is humanly possible; and contributes with his wife, Tabitha, to many local and national charities.

Good To Know

Don't believe everything you read about Stephen King. Among the gossip circulating about the scribe is the rumor that he is going blind. King assures his fans that while he is genetically predisposed to a disease called macular degeneration, which could result in blindness, he is not actually going blind.

King is probably one of the most easily recognizable authors alive, and it's not just because of his string of bestsellers. King has appeared in a number of films based on his work, including Pet Semetary, Thinner, and The Stand.

If you've ever wondered why Stephen King has written several books under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, there is actually a very simple explanation: King is so prolific that he felt it necessary to create an alter-ego so that he could publish more than one book a year. The name was a hastily hobbled together combination of writer Richard Stark (ironically, a pseudonym for Donald Westlake) and Randy Bachman of rock group Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

    My First Stephen King

I was 16 when I first read Tommyknockers. From there I was swept into years of reading every Stephen King novel I could get my hands on. It remains my favorite.

    Classic King Storytelling

My second King book after The Talisman that solidified my status as an avid fan. The imaginative storytelling and intimate details that wrap a King story in greatness are prevalent.

Tommyknockers is my second favorite after Talisman, highly recommend.

    Really liked it.

I really liked this book. Giving it 4 stars because it took me a second try to really get into it and I felt it was a little long. However the story is very good (once it gets going) and had me enraptured at the end!

Not bad but not the best

I LOVE Stephen King books!!! I love how he ties so many different characters together but really helps you understand who they are as individuals. I was so excited to read this because it involved the entire town of Haven. BUT as the story went on, I felt that he didn't do a very good job of letting you get to know several of the recurring characters, which made them easy to forget. As I read, different names would pop up and I would stop and have to think about who the character was. That has NEVER happened to me while reading a King book before. Not even in The Stand or Under The Dome, which are a lot bigger stories that involve so many people. On the whole, I thought this book was good and kept me entertained, but it wasn't my favorite. If you like King then you will probably enjoy The Tommyknockers, but it wasn't his greatest.

    Somewhat disappointing!

I remembered reading excerpts from this book when I was much younger and thinking that it was an interesting story. Finally as an adult I managed to pick up a copy and read the whole thing through from front to back and I have to admit that I was hoping for something... different, I guess. I know that a lot of Stephen King novels are far-fetched and, in general, a little out there, but this is a little below the standard that I have come to expect from one of his books. I'm not saying that it's not well written, because that it is; and it has a little of almost everything thrown into it. However, he has definitely written better books, and with as long as this one is, it is probably a better use of time to read something else; perhaps even another of his novels.

    Dragging on

The Tommyknockers by Stephen King is written like most, if not all, of his stories. Stephen king is well known for his ability to keep readers interested by using suspense. Many of his books have also been made into major motion pictures, including this book. He is also a world wide best seller. With over 50 books, all of which have been best sellers.
In The Tommyknockers the reader follows the story of Roberta Anderson, a middle aged woman from Maine whose writing career has come to a hault. While she's walking through the woods, she trips over a metal shard. After discovering the shard, strange things begin to happen in the nearby town.
I decided to read The Tommyknockers because I've always been a big fan of Stephen King's books. To my surprise as I began reading I found myself to be very uninterested and not wanting to continue. I did continue to read the book and found some parts to have more action in them then others. I personally disliked the book. Its more for someone who is into the fictional aspect of things. The book is also very slow and the action seemed to take forever to build up until something worth reading actually happened.

    Great, Loved it

I first started reading King with this one. I would sit in my car between classes and escape to the crazy world of King's mind. It is gripping, chilling, chills down your back, and unable to stop reading. Took me a little longer than normal but well worth the buy.

    Sci fi meets horror.

This is one of Stephen King's more underrated novels. It's probably the best book of its kind since H.G. Well's War of the Worlds.

    What happened??...

I have been a constant reader of SK novels and i have absolutely LOVED every one of his novels that i have read. A couple years ago i found a copy of this book at a garage sale for 75cents being new to king i didnt even read what is was about i bout it simply bc it beared the King title. It sat upon my shelf for many years and i finally picked it up about a month ago. I just finished it and it was AWFUL. This book was horrible... the beginnings not bad but if u r not into the whole UFO Alien thing dont go near this book!! The fast paced ending kept me going for the last 30 pages or so but I was extremely disappointed overall, and 1.5 out of the 2 stars i gave it were simply a bonus i gave it bc it was written by SK.

    KING'S TOMMYKNOCKERS

i picked this book up at a used books store for 50 cents. i think if i would have spent the money to buy it new, i would have been disappointed. not king's best work, but he still manages to out do many authors. i find it amasing the ammount of research he puts in his books. he really goes above and beyond
