Overview

Even the least sensible woman knew, upon meeting his gaze, that here was a man who was more than he might at first appear, who might steal the heart of even the most resistant woman. But oh, what a lovely theft!

Adventurer Nathanial Harrington would never steal another man's discovery. And he'd never be so dishonorable as to tempt an untouched woman into his bed . . . even one as stunningly beautiful as Gabriella Montini. Yet she intrigues him. What is her secret? Nate would do anything to find out.

Nathanial is an earl's son—but Gabriella knows he's not to be trusted! He's more than just a mere thief of hearts, he's also stolen her brother's good name. Determined to restore his reputation, she'd even masquerade as a destitute orphan and be taken into his family's home. But how can she continue her ruse when she finds herself succumbing to Nathanial's passionate charms?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Launching a series of adventure-flavored historical romances, Alexander (Seduction of a Proper Gentleman) describes Victorian-era amateur archeology as a cutthroat business. Gabriella Montini, mourning her slain brother, is determined to continue his quest for a priceless ancient seal that could help locate the lost city of Ambropia. When Gabriella breaks into the home of a man she suspects of hiding the seal, his brother, handsome adventurer Nathaniel Harrington, catches her and insists on joining her mission. Episodes of skulking and confrontation ensue through the ballrooms, mansions and bedrooms of London. Gabriella is a likable heroine with a few secrets of her own, and Nathaniel proves easy to love. A pleasant subplot describes Gabriella's reunion with her late mother's family. Two additional seals and Nathaniel's two brothers will presumably require two sequels. (May)

Library Journal

He may be London's most eligible bachelor, but adventurer Nathanial Harrington seems more interested in uncovering the treasures of distant lands-until he encounters Gabriella Montini snooping in the Harringtons' library and is intrigued, and then captivated, by the lovely but duplicitous lady. A clever beauty intent on vindicating her family's reputation and a nobleman who is more than her match warily join forces to discover the truth and find unexpected love as well in this lively, lushly sensual Victorian romance, the first in a projected series. Alexander (Seduction of a Proper Gentleman) lives in Omaha.

Meet the Author

Victoria Alexander was an award-winning television reporter until she discovered fiction was much more fun than real life. She turned to writing full time and has never looked back. Victoria grew up traveling the country as an Air Force brat and is now settled in Omaha, Nebraska, with her husband, two teenaged children, and a bearded collie named Sam. She firmly believes housework is a four-letter word, there are no calories in anything eaten standing up, procrastination is an art form, and it's never too soon to panic.

This is a terrific Victorian romance

In 1885 Gabriella Montini grieves the death of her disgraced brother Enrico while also plotting revenge against the Harrington siblings who she believes stole the proof of his work. Enrico claimed an ancient seal proved the existence of the lost city of Ambropia. However, the seal was stolen, his reputation tattered and before he could prove otherwise he was dead. Gabriella plans to substantiate that Nathaniel and Quinton Harrington stole the seal.

During a gala to honor a Harrington sister, Nate catches Gabriella in their library searching for something. He confronts her and swears they are innocent. Nate also vows to assist on her mission though she distrusts anything Harrington. As they begin to fall in love, her endeavor turns dangerous from someone who will kill to keep the truth buried with Enrico.

This is a terrific Victorian romance starring an intrepid heroine with a death bed request and a daring adventurer joining her quest. The story line is witty especially when the lead couple exchanges barbs and is fast-paced as the action never ends. Fans will enjoy the dangerous late nineteenth century antiquities profession in which peril comes from rivals.

    Excellent Victorian Romance!

This book has it all. Romance. Mystery. Loyalty. I love the characters. Nathanial Harrington falls for an unsual young woman (Gabriella Montini) who is determined to find the treasue her deceased brother deserves credit for finding. She thinks Nathaniel and his brother Quinton may have it. This is a must read. Then read its sequal Desires of a Perfect Lady. You will be familiar with the characters. Nathaniel's oldest brother, Sterling The Earl of Wyldewood, helps his long lost love. I hope Victoria continues this series with a love for Quinton Harrington!

    The Virgin's Secret

From Back: Adventurer Nathanial Harrington would never steal another man's discovery. And he'd never be so dishonorable as to tempt an untouched woman into his bed... even one as stunningly beautiful as Gabriella Montini. Yet she intrigues him. What is her secret? Nate would do anything to find out. Nathanial is an earl's son--but Gabriell knows he's not to be trusted!

I absolutely loved this book. I unusually don't like books set in the Victorian era, but this and this series is an exception. The dialogue between Nate and Gabriella was the best I have ever read.

    A Different Kind of Historical

I love it when an author writes a historical romance that has nothing to do with the "TON" and the "Season". It also helped the hero was not another rake resisting love. Don't get me wrong, I like my bad boys now and then but after awhile it becomes redundant. This story had romance, comedy, mystery and a variety of interesting characters you want to get to know better. I like the family connection the Harrington's had with two main characters from one of my favorite books of Victoria's, "The Perfect Wife". Can't wait to read the next in the series, hope it's about Sterling.

    I Also Recommend:

    Captivating Romantic Adventure-Styled Mystery!

In the first book of her new and captivating adventure-styled series THE VIRGIN'S SECRET, Victoria Alexander once again delights her readers with an engaging and humorous romance between a deliciously charismatic hero and an equally fascinating heroine whose secrets are divulged in a tale that comes complete with a light murder mystery, a hint of blackmail, a dash of larceny and an intriguing assemblage of possible bad guys thrown in for thrills~~~Sometimes the only option we have is a leap of faith~~~When Gabriella Montini decided to break into the London home of the nefarious Harrington brothers to search for evidence to prove the fortune-hunters were involved in the theft of an artifact that could confirm the existence of a long lost civilization~~~She didn't expect to get caught-or invited to remain in the house as a guest of their mother, the Dowager Countess of Wyldewood~~~For two of the Harrington brothers were included on the list of men accused by her brother, archeologist Enrico Montini, of stealing his discovery-a priceless seal of Ambropia-and replacing it with a fake; thereby causing the loss of his good reputation with the illustrious Antiquities Society. Also, the men on that list could quite possibly have been involved in Enrico's suspicious and untimely death. But when the brothers deny being involved the Countess believes her sons are innocent, yet that kindhearted and compassionate lady still wants to help Gabriella, who, aside from her trustworthy servants, is all alone in the world. So in order to protect everyone's reputations from being harmed by the scandal that would ensue-from even false accusations of thievery-she suggests Gabriella form an alliance with the family, to solve the riddle of the theft and recover the seal.~~~And of course Gabriella didn't expect to be drawn in to an awkward and dubious partnership with the Harrington brothers~~~However, she agrees because what choice does she really have-as the Earl could easily have had her thrown in jail. Can she trust them??? That remains to be seen, but what better way was there to gather information while keeping her eyes on two of the suspects, than to have them right there under her nose.~~~And Gabriella certainly didn't expect to be constantly thrown together with the handsome youngest son of the house~~~The very charming, scholarly, and hopefully dependable and trustworthy-archeologist cum adventurer-Nathanial Harrington. Though it's pure madness, she now finds herself intensely attracted to that wickedly sexy scoundrel-and worse-it's becoming impossible to resist the teasing smile, laughing eyes and tempting seduction of the man who promises to delight her with passionate kisses in the moonlight; and soooo much more. Gabriella is suddenly afraid Nathanial may be the biggest danger of all because he just might be the one man capable of stealing her heart. And she definitely never expected that.~~~THE VIRGIN'S SECRET was a very enjoyable story. I was thoroughly entertained by the amusing ways the author gradually built up the tension and attraction between Gabriella and Nate. and I loved how Gabriella gets so completely flustered by Nate's flirtatious manner-his nearness-and how she tries to fight her growing desire for him. I thought the banter between the characters was fabulously sharp, remarkably witty and marvelously sexy. Just exactly what Victoria Alexander's fans have come to expect from this clever, amazingly gifted and accomplished author.
