Children's Literature - Heather Christensen
This guided reader from the "We Read Phonics" series features a familiar logic puzzle. How do you get a pot of stew, a goat, and a tiger across a river in a boat that only carries two passengers, without something or someone being eaten? The passengers in question are part of Side Show Dean's act in Mr. Bob's Traveling Show. Side Show Dean slept in and now has to catch up with the rest of the show. Clever readers may figure out how to save the goat and stew from consumption, but all will have fun reading about Dean's dilemma. The watercolor illustrations are full of energy and expression. The gleam in the tiger's eye leaves no doubt in anyone's mind what he will do if left alone with the goat for very long. As with other guided reading stories, the main purpose is to build reading skills. A detailed parent's introduction gives tools for assisting new readers. The book ends with a couple of phonics games using words from the story. These tools can help parents work with children as they strive to join the world of readers, and the engaging story will keep children interested and motivated. Reviewer: Heather Christensen
