John Grisham is an American novelist, known for his popular legal thrillers. Born February 8, 1955 in Jonesboro, Arkansas, John Grisham's childhood dream was to become a professional baseball player. However, he gave up baseball at the age of 18 and earned a law degree from University of Mississippi School of Law. He practiced law for nearly a decade specializing in criminal defense and personal injury litigation before he was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1984. He started writing his first novel, A Time to Kill, after overhearing a testimony of a twelve-year-old rape victim. He completed the book in 1987 and it was published in 1988 by Wynwood Press. He quickly began working on his second novel, the Firm, published in 1991, a book that made his writing hobby a career. The Firm was an instant bestseller and remained on The New York Times' bestsellers list for 47 weeks. After the immense success of his second book, John Grisham quit practicing law to focus on his writing career.
