5 Books To Read While You Wait With Bated Breath for Libba Bray’s Before the Devil Breaks You
Libba Bray’s The Diviners takes readers to a thriving New York City in the 1920s, where there is as much glamour as there is darkness. An ensemble cast featuring Evie O’Neill, a socialite with a secret gift of divining histories from objects, and Memphis Campbell, whose healing touch made him the talk of Harlem, along with others, comes together for a supernatural adventure with demons, ghosts, and monstrous acts from the humans themselves. In this series, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll want to leave the lights on more than once. After reading and falling in love with first book and its sequel, Lair of Dreams, I am now left waiting for that bright Tuesday in October when the world will be graced with the third installment, Before the Devil Breaks You. A Great and Terrible Beauty, by Libba Bray
If you haven’t already read Bray’s famed historical trilogy, get on it. The tale of Gemma Doyle, a boarding school student with a rough past and a talent for seeing the future, has the same stunning combination of historical setting (1895 in this case) and magic as The Diviners does. Like all of Bray’s novels, A Great and Terrible Beauty is filled with strong female friendships, luscious and heartbreaking romance, and a plot that keeps you on your toes.
Speak Easy Speak Love, by McKelle George
Released just a few weeks before Before the Devil Breaks You, McKelle George’s debut retells Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing in 1920s Long Island. Beatrice, newly kicked out of boarding school, is sent to live at Hey Nonny Nonny, her uncle’s old mansion. Hero, Beatrice’s cousin, has a secret speakeasy in the mansion that isn’t doing so well. Set in the summer, you’ll fall in love with this story of six teens as they experience love, misunderstandings, and more.
Iron Cast, by Destiny Soria

Bray’s series navigates a number of difficult topics, one among them being illness and death. In Lair of Dreams especially, characters are worried about a ‘sleeping sickness’ that mysteriously harms people all over New York. In a similar vein (though not supernatural in the same way), Cat Winters’ In the Shadow of Blackbirds explores Mary Shelley Black’s life during the Spanish influenza of 1918. All around Mary families are mourning for their losses, desperate for some assurance of an afterlife or peace for the fallen. With spirit photographers on the rise, Mary remains skeptical…until she sees the image of her first love, deceased, in a photo.
