6 Pumpkin Themed Picture Books

One sure sign that it’s fall is once Starbucks starts brewing up their seasonal Pumpkin Spice Lattes (although doesn’t that seem to happen earlier every year??) Pumpkin muffins, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin pie, pumpkin carving—it seems like it’s Pumpkin Palooza from now through Thanksgiving! So in honor of all things pumpkin, here are some appropriately themed picture books to add to your fall reading list to complete your full autumnal experience.

It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, by Charles M. Schulz
As a kid, It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown was one of my family’s annual Halloween traditions, and something I looked forward to every year. This classic book features all of our favorite Schulz characters: Charlie, Lucy, Linus, Peppermint Patty and as the title reveals, one Great Pumpkin! According to Linus, who writes a letter to the Great Pumpkin every year, he rises out of the pumpkin patch with bags of toys for all of the kids. Regardless of how this tale ends, I still want to believe in the Great Pumpkin!

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin? (Mr. Tiffin’s Classroom Series), by Margaret McNamara and G. Brian Karas
In Mr. Tiffin’s classroom, this creative teacher asks his student to estimate how many seeds are in three different sized pumpkins (small, medium, large)? You would think the largest one has the most seeds (at least I did!), but as Mr. Tiffin’s students will learn, sometimes appearances can be deceiving. This book is great fun, and your young reader may also learn something along the way!

The Biggest Pumpkin Ever, by Steven Kroll and Jeni Bassett
What happens when a house mouse and a field mouse fall in love with the same pumpkin? You get “the biggest pumpkin ever”! Unbeknownst to each other, both mice want to help the pumpkin grow into the biggest one in town, so they each begin to water and feed it. This squash is about to have some major growing pains.

Too Many Pumpkins, by Linda White
Have you ever eaten so much of something that you can never even look at it again? (For me, that would unfortunately be Cadbury Crème Eggs!) For Rebecca Estelle, that would be pumpkins. As a kid she ate nothing but them for an entire month: baked, steamed, boiled, stewed, mashed, and rotten! So when one day a giant pumpkin falls into her yard, uh oh…

The Ugly Pumpkin, by Dave Horowitz
This book is fun, but also has a great underlying message and can teach as well as entertain. The ugliest pumpkin in the pumpkin patch wants someone to pick him and take him home. But all through October this lonely pumpkin gets tricked rather than picked. But come November, will this “ugly pumpkin” ever find where he belongs? (Yes!)

It’s Pumpkin Day, Mouse!, by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond
“Mouse has seven pumpkins to decorate!” Sounds like a fun afternoon to me! Join mouse, of the best selling If You Give a Mouse a Cookie fandom, as he decorates the pumpkin patch. And perhaps you’ll be inspired to decorate your own jack-o-lantern once you finish the book!
