I was a kid in the pre-Harry Potter days. But growing up without the excitement of Hogwarts didn’t seem to get in my way; I still had plenty of books and series to spark my imagination. My favorite go-to reads ranged from the Chronicles of Narnia to Madeleine L’Engle‘s books to Anne of Green Gables. In particular though, I loved C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe because of its introduction to the unforgettable world of Narnia.
Even now, though I have purchased newer versions of my favorite books and series through the years, when I crack open one of the falling-apart copies from my childhood, it transports me back to a magical part of my youth, full of wonder from reading these stories for the first time. In fact, I have made a point to read some of these stories to my oldest son, who is now old enough to enjoy them, out of the very same used books, despite their wear-and-tear and dog-eared edges. They always seem to convey that same magical wonder to him. Plus, I can regale him with anecdotes of my childhood that I’m reminded of when reading these (which doubtless leave him riveted!).

If you don’t still have copies of your own well-loved childhood favorites, by all means buy some new versions and share them with your child. Books can become like old friends, especially when you spend so much time with them. Here are 7 reasons you and your kid won’t be able to put down the classic tale of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and may just reread it as many times as I have.
- It involves a magical wardrobe which acts as a portal to another world. Who doesn’t love that idea (and didn’t pretend that was the case for some piece of furniture in their own home as a kid)?
- The wardrobe also sits in an empty room in an English country house owned by a professor during the time of the WWII air raids in London. So mysterious!
- Once in Narnia, the main characters of the book, siblings Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, encounter talking animals who need their help. Resist that premise, I dare you.
