8 Dated Science Fiction Novels That Are Still Essential Reading

synnersScience fiction can be a harsh mistress: what is incredibly futuristic idea today might seem quaint and ridiculous by tomorrow. The term “zeerust,” coined by Douglas Adams and John Lloyd in their delightful book The Meaning of Liff and codified by TV Tropes, is defined as, “datedness of something originally intended to seem futuristic.” In practice, it refers to a once SFnal idea that, in retrospect, seems vaguely ridiculous.
By their very nature, many science fiction novels will wind up suffering from zeerust. For every Star Trek replicator, there is a Star Trek starship computer that is less powerful than the phone in your pocket right now. But just because a novel is a little zeerusty, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth reading. Technological fancy might be what attracts some of us to science fiction, but a well-written book remains worthwhile, no matter how dated it becomes. Here are 8 books that are no longer on the cutting edge, but but no less worth your time for it.
