8 Questions for Little Shaq Takes a Chance Author Shaquille O’Neal

Although he’s best known for his incredibly successful career in the NBA, Shaquille O’Neal’s interests and talents extend far beyond the court. Not only has he acted in films, recorded albums, and worked as a television analyst, but he is also a dedicated philanthropist and a national spokesperson for the Boys & Girls Club of America. O’Neal is also the author of a sweet chapter book series for young readers, which features the adventures of a young man named Little Shaq, and emphasizes teamwork, helping others, and discovering and nurturing your own abilities. The second book in the series, Little Shaq Takes a Chance, hits B&N bookshelves April 26. The B&N Kids Blog asked O’Neal a few questions about this exciting endeavor.
What made you decide to write a children’s book series?
Education is very important to me and I wanted to try and make reading fun for the young children out there.
Did your kids give you any input (or inspiration) when it came to writing these books?
Absolutely. I definitely wanted their insights into what makes a good book for young kids since they were first, second, and third-graders not too long ago.

In Little Shaq Takes a Chance, Little Shaq is nervous about trying sushi for the first time. Have you ever been a picky eater yourself?
Not really, I’ve always been willing to try any and all types of foods.
Were you ever bullied as a kid?
No. To be honest, I was a bit of a bully myself until my mom and dad found out and put a stop to it immediately. Lesson learned real quick.
Who was one of your favorite teachers, growing up?
Mrs. Swann.
What is your favorite genre to read these days?
Historical biographies.
What was the last great book you read?
The 48 Laws of Power.
Who would you say is the biggest bookworm in the NBA?
Phil Jackson—he was always giving players on our team book recommendations.
