Since 2019, I have taught one of Harvard Business School’s most sought-after classes: a course on happiness. Yet among the brilliant, driven young strivers on campus—both at Harvard and America’s many universities—I encountered a paradox. On campus,  twenty-somethings are expected to flourish while they are surrounded by friendship, opportunity, and ambition; but I found the opposite: rising rates of anxiety, deep loneliness, and the unsettling feeling that life, though decent on paper, feels bereft of meaning.

Searching for answers beyond so-called “hacks”, I turned to new research, ancient wisdom, and real-life conversations with students and professionals. What I discovered was not simply a mental-health trend ebbing and flowing, but instead something of a deeper rupture: young adults neither know the meaning of their lives nor were they actively seeking this out. As the days go by, digital life dominates every waking moment. Our free time is spent scrolling through 10-second videos, jobs have become remote, people are swiping instead of dating, and everything is curated to pass the time as painlessly as possible. In short, real life has been replaced by a simulation of real life.

In a world with constant distraction and quick solutions, there is one question our phones can’t seem to answer: What is the meaning of your life? Drawing on decades of research in the science of happiness, and complemented by art, faith, and personal anecdotes, I will aim to guide you to that pertinent question and provide a plan for you to find the answer.

I invite you to the long, sometimes arduous journey of seeking beauty, risking your heart for love, listening for your calling, and transcending yourself via religion or philosophy. Will this road sometimes lead to suffering? Sure. But that is part of the adventure. And will this adventure also break the simulation, and help you discover the meaning of your life? Absolutely. I hope to lead you to move beyond distraction and rediscover a life fully alive.
