“You Must Make Yourself Rice with Butter and Soy Sauce”
It’s been such a joy to watch the novel BUTTER by Asako Yuzuki take the world by storm. It’s the story of a female gourmet cook and a serial killer and the journalist intent on cracking her case. The thing that I was most surprised by (although really I shouldn’t have been surprised—the book makes it sound so good) is that people are curious about butter rice! If you were feeling like you wanted something delicious, cozy (and a little murderous!), here it is!
Butter Rice:
2 tablespoons salted Échiré butter
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 small bowl of hot sushi rice
“Add butter and soy sauce to freshly cooked rice….The butter should be cold. Remove it from the fridge just before. Superior quality butter should be eaten when it’s still cold and hard, to truly luxuriate in its texture and aroma. It will begin to melt almost immediately with the heat of the rice, but I want you to eat it before it melts fully. Cool butter and warm rice.”
You can read the entire scene on pages 30-31 of BUTTER by Asako Yuzuki.
Note from Rika: “There’s an Échiré shop in Maranouchi Station. Go there and look at it, properly, before you buy it.”
