B&N Reads

Top 10 Favorite eBooks This Year (So Far)

It’s important that I let you know I’m an equal opportunity book reader. Sometimes you’ll find me clutching a hardcover or paperback as I peer over the top and people watch when turning pages. You might find me with my earbuds in, stifling my laughter (or tears) from whatever audiobook I’m listening to (likely a memoir). Most of the time, I’m with one of my many NOOKs (or using the B&N NOOK App on my phone) because it lets me carry a ton of books, so I’m always prepared if I finish what I’m reading or my mood changes.

I’m an overthinker by nature, so it took me some time to narrow this list down to only ten of my favorite eBooks of this year (so far).

Sometimes a book comes along at the right time, and that’s what Greta was for me. I laughed and cried (a few times on the subway) while reading this book, and now I’m ready to plan my own Alaskan cruise—and I always swore I’d NEVER go on a cruise. If you’re not ready to change your tune and set sail, pick this up and I know you’ll enjoy your time on this ship (not a boat).

Jennifer L. Armentrout keeps it spicy in the latest installment of her #BookTok favorite series. Make sure you also read A Shadow in the Ember—a prequel series set in the beloved Blood and Ash world. That should (hopefully) hold you over until the next book in the Blood and Ash series, right?

I wouldn’t say I’m a huge romance fan, but I often gravitate towards romcoms and stories with a happily ever after. Historical romance has not typically been on my TBR list. That changed when I heard Alexis Hall (author of Boyfriend Material and Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake) had written a queer Regency romance that was easy to fall in love with. It’s the first in a new series, but it’s so good that it’s worth waiting for the rest.

As a child I loved reading. This love slowed a bit as I got older, until my 20s when I randomly discovered (and became obsessed with) memoirs and became hooked on reading all over again. Never Simple reminded me why I love memoirs. I couldn’t stop turning the pages as Scheier unraveled the type of family mystery I’d expect in a movie (and I would definitely watch a movie adaptation of this, especially with the actress Scheier mentions in the book—I won’t spoil it for you).

Xochitl Gonzalez’s debut had me hooked from the first page. I couldn’t escape this book on Instagram, and all the buzz and hype were accurate. It was excellent (and it was one of our Discover Picks of the Month). Aside from waiting to see what the author does next I’m most excited to see what happens when Olga’s story hits the screen as an upcoming Hulu series.

Sierra Six (Gray Man Series #11)

By Mark Greaney

I LOVE a good flashback episode in television, and that’s exactly what the latest entry in the Gray Man series was for me. It’s the usual action and excitement you expect from Mark Greaney but in a double dose as the story jumps from the current day back to the Court Gentry’s first mission. This series gets better with each book and maybe there’s a film franchise to come, as a movie based on the first novel arrives in theaters and on Netflix this summer. If you do want to start from the very beginning, I’d recommend this eBook bundlewith the first three books in the series.

Sometimes I buy eBooks and completely forget that I own them (OOPS!). Last summer while on vacation I found volume 1 in my NOOK library and devoured it in an afternoon. This was the first time when I immediately purchased and pre-ordered everything that was available, reading what I could and then patiently waiting for volume 4, which (FINALLY!) arrived at the beginning of this year. Now, like many others, I’m patiently waiting for more of the Netflix series (…and another Heartstopper book too please).

It’s stories like this one that make me think about taking a break from life in the big city for a slower pace, a less crazy commute and the possibility of hanging out with a baby goat (I’m also a fan of dogs…and friendly cats too). No mermaids or thingamabobs here—just a perfect feel-good romance that made me LOL a lot.
