6 Books & Series to Occupy Your Middle Schooler During Spring Break

Kristys Great IdeaSpring break is a glorious week every kid looks forward to for three reasons: One, it signifies that the school year is seriously almost over. Two, there aren’t many teachers cruel enough to assign much homework over spring break. And three, it’s warm enough to play outside, swim, take day trips, and more! But not all spring breaks live up to our dreams. In fact, a lot of them go the same way any long weekend does: with your kid complaining about being bored and watching way too much television. And even if your family has big vacation plans, there’s bound to be some down time, whether it includes an eight hour road trip, or a storm taking over your beach day. To that end, here are 6 relatively new and exciting books and series young readers will devour over that long, glorious week off. Some will remind you of your own middle school spring breaks (I remember reading roughly 20 of the The Baby-Sitters Club books during mine in 7th grade), and some will make you want to steal the book off of your kid’s nightstand for your own TBR collection. Above all, here’s to a spring break filled with reading and choosing books over Netflix (most of the time).

The War That Saved My Life, by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
It doesn’t exactly scream “spring breaaak!”, but hear us out: The War That Saved My Life was included on the Wall Street Journal‘s list of Best Children’s Books of 2015. It tells the story of Ada, a little girl who has never left her apartment because her deformed foot embarrasses her mother. When her younger brother is shipped out of London as World War II looms, Ada escapes along with him, and learns what love and trust is from Susan, the woman who reluctantly takes the siblings in. This story is a great way to start a dialogue about what it was like for children in war-torn London, as well as the power of unconditional love, and the strength of the human spirit. See? You can learn even when school isn’t in session!
How are you keeping your young readers busy this spring break?
