Spirit Animals Book 7: The Evertree is Full of Surprises, Endings, and New Beginnings

For readers who have already devoured the first six novels in the middle-grade fantasy series Spirit Animals, pouncing on the seventh and final installment, The Evertree, available March 31, is a given. What’s less predictable are all of the plot twists and turns Book 7 holds for fans and the Four Fallen.
But this is not The Baby-Sitters Club—you can’t just jump into this series in Book 7 without being completely lost (Wait, what’s the Bile? Where’s Meilin? And, um, who is Meilin anyway?).

For those who haven’t yet sunk their teeth into these books, here’s the gist: Spirit Animals is a multi-platform, multi-author fantasy series for tweens about four kids who, like all children of Erdas, drink the Nectar when they turn 11 to see if they summon a spirit animal. But this special foursome—Conor from Eura, Meilin from Zhong, Rollan from Amaya, and Abeke from Nilo—don’t summon just any spirit animal. They’ve each summoned one of the legendary Four Fallen—Briggan the Wolf, Uraza the Leopard, Jhi the Panda, and Essix the Falcon—Great Beasts who had previously sacrificed themselves to save their world and have now returned as spirit animals. Over the course of the series, Conor, Meilin, Rollan, Abeke, and their respective spirit animals have worked with the Greencloaks (the good guys) to battle against the Conquerors (bad guys) and other colluding dark forces wishing to take control of Erdas.
Ships in 1-2 days.
Each of the seven books is by a different popular author (or authors)— Brandon Mull, Maggie Stiefvater, Garth Nix, Sean Williams, Shannon Hale, Tui T. Sutherland, Eliot Schrefer, and Marie Lu—similar to the 39 Clues and Infinity Ring series, also from Scholastic. There’s also an online role-playing game in which kids can create their own character, choose a spirit animal, and go on quests to save Erdas.
Got all that? And you’ve read the other six books?
Then you’re ready for Book 7: Shane has betrayed the team, Meilin is under the control of the Bile and the Conquerors, the weather is weird all over Erdas, and Tarik is gone—as are all but two of the talismans. And Conor has a terrible vision of a battle that the Four Fallen spirit animals may not survive. Is it just a dream? Can he and the Greencloaks trust his vision to lead them into the unknown in order to possibly rescue Meilin and all of Erdas?
“It’s time for us to take a chance,” he says. “Even if it’s our only one.”
No spoilers ahead, we promise, but here are a few exciting/fun/interesting/weird things to look forward to in the last book:
Wondering about that title? Well, keep on wondering for most of the book, because you won’t find out what the Evertree is until page 141 (and don’t you dare flip ahead!).
Think you know the Four Fallen inside and out after reading the first six books? Briggan, Uraza, Jhi, and Essix still have a few tricks up their furry/feathered sleeves. An unexpected member of the Four Fallen steps up in a big way in this final installment.
If you’re a nail-biter, you may want to sit on your hands while reading Book 7 (though, sure, that may make turning pages difficult), because the action is non-stop in this story. Lots of tense fighting and battle scenes. And having some tissues handy wouldn’t hurt because, unfortunately, there are some animal and human lives lost—but we’re not saying which ones.
What do you think about the Spirit Animals series?
