The 2015 Hugo Award Winners

The 2015 Hugo Award Winners

three-body-coverThis past weekend, the 2015 Hugos were handed out during “Sasquan,” the 73rd annual World Science Fiction Convention, held in Spokane, Washington, finally putting to rest one the most contentious and unpleasant campaign seasons in the more than 60-year history of the awards. If that comes as news to you, count yourself lucky (and if you are truly curious, this article provides some of the background). As a result of the controversy, the list of winners is a bit odd, considering there weren’t any in five categories—voters have the option of placing “No Award” higher than any of the nominees, and did so as many times this year as they had in the entire history of the Hugos.
The upheaval did not extend to the winner of the best novel category, The Three-Body Problem, by China’s Cixin Liu, translated by Ken Liu (himself a regular Hugo nominee for short fiction; his debut novel, The Grace of Kings, was released earlier this year). Cixin Liu’s victory marked the first time a translated novel has picked up the top award in science fiction and fantasy, and on the same night as another rare in-translation win: “The Day the Earth Turned Upside Down,” by Thomas Olde Heuvlet, translated by Lia Belt, won Best Novelette.
The B&N Sci-Fi & Fantasy Blog was in attendance at Sasquan, and we spent the weekend talking to as many different authors as we could (over a dozen at last count!). In the coming weeks, we’ll have a lot of great interviews to share with you. In the meantime, check out the rest of the 2015 Hugo winners below.
