Foxfire is a classic book series that brings the philosophy and wisdom of simple living in the Appalachian Mountains to millions of readers. The first Foxfire book was a surprise bestseller upon being released in 1972.

There are 12 Foxfire books in the original series, plus special anniversary editions for the 40th, 45th and 50th anniversaries of Foxfire.

How did Foxfire get its name?

Foxfire began as a magazine as part of a school project to promote student engagement through researching the history, culture and traditions of Appalachia. The students chose to name their magazine Foxfire after the bioluminescent glow caused by a certain type of fungus which grows on rotting wood. The magazine stories were eventually compiled and anthologized into a series of Foxfire books.
