CHAPTER 1

1 ... Eye-catching Colors

BRACELET IN TURQUOISE, PINK, AND YELLOW

* * *

MODEL SIZE

Bracelet approx. 7¾ in.

MATERIALS

* Pink satin cord, [empty set] 0.7 mm, 5 ft. 10¾ in., 3 ft. 7¼ in., and 23 ½ in. long

* Turquoise satin cord, ø 0.7 mm, 27½ in. long

* 32 rocailles in opaque yellow, [empty set] 4.5 mm

* 2 Venetian chains in gold and silver, [empty set] 5 mm, each 6¾ in. long

* 2 silver jump rings, [empty set] 8 mm

* Silver lobster clasp, 5/8 in. long

* Embroidery needle

1 Loop a jump ring through the first link of the gold chain. Thread the 23½ in. long pink cord through the jump ring, double it and tie a loose O-Kn around the jump ring. Pull the 5 ft. 10¾ in. long cord through this O-Kn and through the first chain link until the two ends are even. Tape both ends of the chain to the work surface. Lay both of the short strands to the right of the chain (the knot-bearing strands) and place the long strands (the knotting strands) on the outsides, to the left and right.

2 String one rocaille onto the right knot-bearing strand. Thread the left-hand knotting strand through the next-but-one link of the chain, toward the right, and tie a square knot with the four strands. Then thread the left-hand knotting strand back through the same chain link to the left. Repeat step 2 until you have woven through the entire chain.

3 Using the embroidery needle, thread the 3 ft. 7¼ in. long cord through the silver chain in a blanket stitch.

4 Now lay the two chains side by side as shown in the illustration and stitch them together using the turquoise cord.

5 Secure all the cords by first knotting and then melting the ends. Attach the clasp to the bracelet using the second jump ring.

5+6 ... I Love Pink

BRACELETS IN BLUE, PINK, ORANGE, AND WHITE

* *

MATERIALS

BRACELET IN LIGHT BLUE AND PINK OR PINK, ORANGE, AND LIGHT BLUE

Embroidery floss in pink and light blue or pink, orange, and light blue

BRACELET IN PINK, ORANGE, WHITE, AND DARK BLUE

* Embroidery floss in pink, orange, white, and dark blue

The following example describes how to make the light blue and pink bracelet. The version in pink, orange, and light blue is knotted in the same way, except that the squares are worked in two colors (see figure).

Bracelet in Light Blue and Pink

1 Start with four light blue rows of four DL-Kn each (see page 160), then leave the ends hanging. To the right, tie one pink DL-Kn, then two more offset below the first, then three DL in the third row.

2 Tie the second light blue square using DR-Kn and then the pink corner to the left also using DR-Kn. Continue this pattern until the bracelet reaches the desired length. Complete the bracelet by braiding the ends into a round braid, with four strands made up of two threads each.

Bracelet in Pink, Orange, White, and Dark Blue

You will make this bracelet using the same method as the bracelet in light blue and pink, except that the blue strand will be added in between the white DL-Kn. Simply stretch the blue strand over the white knots when tying the DR-Kn and only tie it into the DL-Kn. Braid the ending round braid with three groups of two and one group of three threads.

NOTE Because of the pattern, these bracelets look better when worn with the underside facing up.

7 + 8 ... The Colors of the Rainbow

RAINBOW AND RED BRACELETS

* *

MATERIALS

RAINBOW BRACELET

* Cotton floss in yellow, light orange, dark orange, red, apple green, pistachio, pink, purple, light blue, blue, and dark blue

* 5 Swarovski ® glue-on stones, clear, [empty set] 6 mm

* Large-hole silver bead, ø 10 mm, hole size [empty set] 5 mm

* 17 silver-lined rocailles in matte red, [empty set] 4.5 mm

* 2 metal cubes 3 mm x 3 mm, hole size [empty set] 1.5 mm

SEE DIAGRAM PAGE 182

Rainbow Bracelet

1 Arrange the strings in the order shown in the diagram on page 182 and tape them to the table approx. 6 in. from the end.

2 Knot section A of the diagram. Start from the top middle with pink as your knotting strand and tie six DR-Kn diagonally to the right. After section A, work the pattern sequence (section B) twice. Finish with section C.

3 Glue the Swarovski® stones onto the center of the bracelet using the jewelry glue. Finish the bracelet with closure version 1 (see page 164).

Red Bracelet

1 Measure out two pieces of string (6 ft. 6½ in. and 4 ft. 7 in.) and double them. Tie an O-Kn approx. 1¼ in. from the closed ends using all four strands, to create a small loop. Pull the two metal cubes over this loop. To do this, pass a piece of wire ([empty set] 0.25 mm) through the loop and bend it in half. Slide both metal cubes over the ends of the wire and onto the loop.

2 Arrange the strands as shown in the diagram. Begin in the middle with a DR-Kn. Tie a DL-Kn below and to the left and a DR-Kn below and to the right. Using a piece of wire, slide a bead onto the two middle strands and continue the pattern sequence as shown in the diagram. Repeat the sequence 17 times.

3 Tie an O-Kn, using all the strands, and a second OKn approx. ¼ in. from the first.

9+10 ... Pink and Orange Harmony

* 15 silver rocailles, [empty set] 2.6 mm

* 4 silver large-hole beads, [empty set] 9 mm, hole size [empty set] 4 mm

* 2 silver large-hole beads, [empty set] 6 mm, hole size [empty set] 3 mm

BRACELET WITH BEAD DANGLES

* 3 silver metal beads, diamond-shaped, [empty set] 8 mm

* 2 rose quartz beads, ø 1 cm

* 1 pink cut-glass bead, [empty set] 8 mm

* 2 pink cat's eye beads, [empty set] 6 mm

* 11 silver head pins, ¾ in. long

* 2 silver metal rings, [empty set] 8 mm

* Silver jump ring, [empty set] 6 mm

* Silver lobster clasp, 5/8 in. long

Bracelet with Silver Beads

1 Arrange the strands as shown in the diagram below and tape them to your work surface approx. 6 in. from the ends.

2 This bracelet will be woven using only DR-Kn moving diagonally to the right. Before knotting the fifth row, string one rocaille onto each of the middle three strands and push them all the way up. Now knot the fifth row using four DR-Kn.

3 After the eighth row, pull all of the strands through a large-hole bead, ø 9 mm. Repeat this pattern sequence four times. At the end, repeat the sequence once more, but without adding the large-hole bead at the end.

4 Tie an O-Kn directly below the last row, using all strands. Complete the bracelet using Closure version 1 (see page 164).

Bracelet with Bead Dangles

1 Measure out two pink strings of 3 ft. 3¼ in. and 5 ft. 10¾ in., respectively, and an orange string of 7 ft. 10½ in. Work the beginning of closure version 3 (see page 165).

2 Next, arrange the strands according to the diagram below. This bracelet is unusual in that you will be weaving with two strands at a time. Tie two DR-Kn using the two orange strands. Then tie a DL-Kn using the two middle pink strands and finally two DL-Kn using the orange strands. Now tie a DR-Kn using the middle two pink strands. Continue this sequence for 5½ in.

3 Work the conclusion of closure version 3. Now place a bead onto each of the head pins and bend the other end into an eyelet, using a pair of round-nose pliers. Twist open the eyelet with a pair of flat-nose pliers, hang it in the bracelet, and close the eyelet again.

Place the knot-bearing threads (1 ft. 3¾ in. long each) in the middle and the knotting threads (3 ft. 3¼ in. long each) on the outside to the left and right. Now knot 6 in. using Sq-Kn.

2 Stick one end of the rhinestone chain into the loose O-Kn at the end of the bracelet and pull it tight. Tape the end to the work surface. Lay the rhinestone chain on top of the woven bracelet and tape them together at the bottom end. Double the 7 ft. 10½ in. long strand and fasten it to the beginning of the bracelet, just below the O-Kn, using a half-hitch knot. Now knot the already woven bracelet and the chain together using Sq-Kn, always placing one Sq-Kn between the links of the rhinestone chain.

3 Pass all the strands through the second metal ring and tie an O-Kn directly below the last Sq-Kn, tying the metal ring into the knot. Trim the ends of the bracelet to approx. 1¼ in. Attach the clasp and the owl pendant to the bracelet using jump rings.

To do so, take the three left-hand strands in your left hand and the three righthand strands in your right hand. Pass the left-hand pink strand from the outside over the purple strand and over the ball chain and take it in your right hand. Now pass the right-hand pink strand over the purple strand, the ball chain, and the pink strand in the middle, and take it in your left hand. Now pass the outside-left purple strand into the middle and take it in your right hand. Pass the outside-right purple strand into the middle and take it into your left hand. Do the same with the ball chain.

Continue to repeat the starred instructions.
