29 ... It's not just a number.

Allie Sanders thinks life in a small town can’t get any more dull and boring. She plans to escape after graduation. After a bad break-up, she wants to sail through junior year without distraction. Then the mysterious loner sits down in front of her in AP English. He’s the guy she noticed last year desperately trying to stay invisible. She wants to know his secrets.Suddenly her much older military brother, Doug, makes a rare appearance. He takes a special interest in her life. Suspicious of his motives Allie holds back, never really trusting him. She’d go against family and friends to protect the loner—and his secrets—even if it ends up breaking her heart.

Reviewed by Rabia Tanveer for Readers' Favorite Nancy Pennick's 29 is a novel about young love and how one decision can change your life. The novel is about Allison “Allie” Sanders. She is just a regular girl with dreams of leaving her small town behind when she graduates from high school. She does not like her life, but there is a guy in her school, Lucas, she secretly likes. And after her boyfriend breaks up with her, she takes a chance... There are some big secrets he is keeping from her, but Allie loves him enough to let him keep his secrets, for the time being. When Allie’s military brother shows an interest in Lucas, she is afraid for him. Her brother physically and psychologically abuses her. But despite that, she would not give up on Lucas, no matter how much pressure her brother puts on her. What is Lucas hiding? Why does her brother want Lucas? Can she survive it? Nancy Pennick's 29 is a mysterious novel that will grab your attention from the get go. The story is fast paced and very well written. This is not your usual boy-meets-girl story. This has a lot of drama and a lot of heartbreak. This is a thrilling read that will keep you focused and not wanting to let go. I literally finished this in a couple of hours. This is indeed a very well-written novel that will take you on a ride.

29 by Nancy Pennick is a page turner. Well written and fast-paced, it is filled with the ups and down of young love and clever science fiction issues that center around being born on leap year. Since this is a leap year, I found it especially interesting. Allison finds the love of her life in Lucas. He walks into class one day, mysterious and hurting, and her heart goes out to him. She is determined to find out what is behind the secretive exterior. And so is her older brother, Doug, who is in the military. Even after she knows she should walk away, her heart refuses to let him go. Lucas is a loner. Though he tries not get involved with Allison, he feels the same pull that she does. He loves her. Together they find strength, love, and pain. The intensity of both the plot and the characters pulled me in and held me until the last page. Yes, it is Young Adult with family drama and the emotions of young love. But it also has secretive military missions and excellent twists and turns throughout the story. I highly recommend this story and look forward to the next in the series.

'29' was excellent! I found the story unique and the characters very relatable – I especially liked the way they interacted with one another. Also, while it may be categorized as a young adult novel, I can assure you that people of all ages will very much enjoy this novel. I can't wait to speed through the next books in the series!

29 was one of the best reads I've had in a long time. Allie is a typical teenage girl who has a mad crush on a stranger and she goes to great lengths to get to meet him and know him better. She never would have guessed Lucas' secret and how her older brother, Doug, would become a part of their lives to the extent he does. I found the premise of the book to be very interesting and captivating for the reader. I would recommend this book to anyone, not just a New Adult! Pennick has another series, Waiting for Dusk, which I enjoyed fully but 29 surpasses it with its intriguing story and great characters. Great job!!
