I started this novel in response to a new tenant at our apartment building in Arlington, Virginia. It was startling to see an individual so caught up in racist hate that several old-timers in the building were alarmed at the overt hatred directed at them-these same people who would otherwise welcome him with open arms and, perhaps, bring a cake to his door.
