This book contains basic foundations of knowledgepertaining to pediatric occupational therapy as well as informationabout assessment, intervention, and the traditional arenas of pediatricoccupational therapy practice. The purpose is primarily to provide acomprehensive framework for occupational therapy students and to be areference and teaching tool for occupational therapy practitionersworking with children. This book is written at level that is suitablefor both undergraduate occupational therapy students as well asoccupational therapists who work with children. I believe this bookwill be most beneficial to the therapist who is new to pediatricoccupational therapy or who may be changing practice arenas. Thisbook features a wide array of knowledgeable authors, many of whom areexperts in their field. The key terms, chapter objectives, and studyquestions help greatly to illustrate the main points of chapters andserve to guide learning. The extensive and pertinent referencesprovided after each chapter are also a nice feature. My overallassessment of this book is that it is a helpful learning tool forstudents and a comprehensive general resource for practitioners. Itprovides an inclusive view of current pediatric occupational therapypractice. I do believe that the reorganization, updates of topics, andaddition of current pediatric information make this third edition avaluable replacement for the existing edition.

Description: This is the seventh edition of a book that discusses the varied service delivery populations/contexts for occupational therapy practitioners working with babies, children, and adolescents, while paying appropriate attention to evidence, research, and occupation. The previous edition was published in 2010.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide OT practitioners with the "knowledge and skills" necessary for competence in pediatric practice. These objectives, while grand, are fully addressed by the book, while the accompanying website includes additional student resources.
Audience: This book is written for students, but the audience also can include established practitioners who need additional information about pediatric practice. Not only is this a good refresher for experienced practitioners, it also can be a great resource for practitioners entering a new practice area.
Features: The topics the book covers encompass a comprehensive continuum of birth to adolescence and include information about evaluation tools, family structures, theoretical models, with a consistent emphasis on the importance of occupation. It is helpful that chapters don't have to be read sequentially and readers can review OT theoretical models as well as learn about other models (e.g. motor control, learning theory, dynamic systems). The case studies are particularly helpful in infusing real life into the educational material.
Assessment: Because of its comprehensive nature, this easily could be called a handbook of occupational therapy pediatric practice. It provides a solid foundation for students who are preparing for practice while offering experienced practitioners a refresher that supports evidence-based, occupation-centered practice. The seventh edition underscores the need to offer current references and theories, and a reminder of how occupation should be the foundation for our practice.
