Lauren's job as a cold case homicide detective is her life. And life just got complicated.

Lauren Riley is an accomplished detective who has always been on the opposite side of the courtroom from slick defense attorney Frank Violanti. But now he's begging to hire her as a private investigator to help clear his client of murder. At first Lauren refuses, wanting nothing to do with the media circus surrounding the case—until she meets the eighteen-year-old suspect.

To keep an innocent teen from life in prison, Lauren must unravel the conflicting evidence and changing stories to get at the buried facts. But the more she digs, the more she discovers that nothing is what it first appears to be. As Lauren puts her career and life in danger, doubt lurks on every corner . . . and so does her stalker.

"Recommend this one to anyone who loves courtroom dramas where lawyers tear into witnesses like pit bulls. And to anyone hot for a police procedural where tired cops make mistakes but slowly, relentlessly—and with morbid humor—get the job done. Redmond delivers both in one package...The real attraction here is a keyhole view into a world that turns our expectations upside down—a world where a bullying, quasi-fascist cop can be the only one with a handle on reality. Keep your eyes on Redmond, a retired cop who knows how to write."—Booklist

"Redmond, a recently retired Buffalo PD homicide detective, keeps everything moving nicely in this well-constructed crime novel."—Publishers Weekly

"An excellent police procedural combined with a psychological thriller."—Kirkus Reviews

"A Cold Day in Hell is a fine first novel and Lauren Riley is cool new addition to the world of PI and cop protagonists. A retired detective, Lissa Marie Redmond gives it to the reader without the sugarcoating and lifts the veil off how the system really works...or doesn't."—Reed Farrel Coleman, New York Times bestselling author of What You Break

"Ex-cop Lissa Redmond has a sure hand with police procedure, which should be no surprise. The joy of A Cold Day in Hell comes from her equally sure hand with storytelling. This is a welcome new voice on the crime scene."—SJ Rozan, bestselling author of Ghost Hero

"Redmond has concocted a well-crafted story with plenty of twists, but more importantly good characterization."—Mystery Scene Magazine

When cold case homicide detective Lauren Riley is on the case, she digs into the facts to solve murders no one has been able to solve in years. And she’s good at her job. Always on the opposite side of a case from defense attorney Frank Violanti, she turns down his overtures to act as a private investigator for him. The case he wants her to work will be a media circus, and Lauren neither wants nor needs that kind of publicity. But Frank convinces her he needs her help to prevent a teen accused of a terrible crime from spending his life in prison. She accedes and starts to dig. But is everything what it seems to be? Lauren’s past complicates her life, even as the case becomes more challenging. Will she be able to figure out who the real murderer is before time runs out in this courtroom drama? Author Lissa Marie Redmond is a retired cop who brings authenticity and reality to this gritty crime novel.

I received this book for free from #netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This was a crime debut novel. I don't normally do a lot of crime novels but the story of this book intrigued me so I had to request it. It is a very fast pace read. It kept me intrigued from one page to another. It was a very fast read. We follow the story of a mother that works closely with the police and investigators on cold cases. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this book.

A Cold Day in Hell by Lissa Marie Redmond will suck you in from the very beginning and you won't be able to stop reading until you read the very last word. And when you do, you will feel like your head will explode !!! A Cold Day in Hell is the first book in the Cold Case Investigation mystery series .... and for me, cold cases are very interesting but this series is more than just cold cases. A Cold Day in Hell has you riding along with Lauren Riley who works in the Cold Case Department but she also gets hires as a private investigator for a current murder case. And what makes it better is that she does not get along with Frank Violanti, the defense attorney who hires her. But being great at her job and always wanting justice served, Lauren takes on the case, putting her differences with Violanti aside. While Lauren is still working cold cases, she has a lot of things she is trying to juggle....her ex-husband is back in the picture but not in the way that she would like him to be, she has a stalker that she is handling until the time is right to blow that all to pieces, she misses her daughters who are away at college, and she is working the private investigator angle on the case trying not to burn all the bridges with the people that help her with her cold cases....... A Cold Day in Hell will grab you as soon as you open the book and you will blow through the chapters very quickly..... I love reading books with small chapters and even though some of the chapters are very small, they are still filled with intense entertainment !!!! I was hooked on this first book in this series and will be trying to patiently wait for the second book. I know from the ending of A Cold Day in Hell that it can only get better.......

This was a fairly well-written police procedural with a few interesting twists and turns and a solid cast of characters, but I thought it had a few flaws. A few of the characters, including the protagonist, displayed some rather inconsistent behavior. The courtroom drama portion of the story had a significantly faster pace than the rest of the novel, which got a tad slow at times, and made it feel like the book was speeding toward a conclusion. And the ending, while a decent twist, was rather abrupt and left too much hanging for my tastes. I prefer crime novels to wrap up the primary plots better than this one did. Overall, I think this is a pretty good debut, but there were a few places I thought it could've been stronger. [NOTE: I received an ARC of this title from the publisher via NetGalley.]

Lissa Marie Redmond nails the gritty realism in this police procedural. A COLD DAY IN HELL by Lissa Marie Redmond The First Cold Case Investigation As a cold case homicide detective Lauren Riley is used to dealing with the seamier side of society, and that includes defense attorney Frank Violanti. But after meeting the young kid he's defending on a murder charge, Lauren agrees to do some PI work for him. Detective Riley must navigate the pitfalls of working for "the other side" while continuing to investigate her cold case workload. What will put her in more danger, an old case, the current murder, or her personal life? Power is the thread that ties everything together in this first Cold Case Investigation, showing what people will do to get it and keep it. A COLD DAY IN HELL illustrates the abuse women face on a daily basis and the power men desire to wield over them. It's also a finely detailed mystery, rich in atmosphere and filled with complex character dynamics. Lissa Marie Redmond nails the gritty realism in this police procedural. Filled with dark troubled people its multiple mysteries coalesce into one detective's story - and struggle. FTC Disclosure – The publisher sent me a digital ARC provided through NetGalley, in the hopes I would review it.
