Margaretta Fortescue desperately needs to disappear from London society, and her only hope is to follow the rumors of another young woman who recently made a life for herself away from the glare of society. Her search leads her to the market town of Marlborough where, in spite of her efforts to avoid attention, she can't seem to elude local solicitor Nash Banfield.

All Nash wants is a quiet, sedate life--no risks or surprises. When Margaretta, clearly on the run and unwilling to answer questions, interrupts his solitude, his curiosity and his principles won't let him leave this determined woman without assistance.

But will discovering the truth about Margaretta make him think twice about finally taking a risk on love?

A Search for Refuge is an e-only novella that gives an exciting introduction to Kristi Ann Hunter's new Regency historical romance series, Haven Manor! Includes an extended excerpt of the first full-length novel in the series, A Defense of Honor.

This is the story of a young widow who discovers she is pregnant by her late husband. Fearing that her husband’s brother had caused the fatality so he (the second son) can inherent the family estate and title, she decides to disappear until her baby is born. She hopes the baby will be a girl and then be safe from brother-in-law since only males may inherit. But with no money and no one to help her, she is in a desperate situation. How she manages and those who help her turns in to a blessing for herself and many others. Very good book, with a sequel to follow.

Clean, Christian romance. Loved the characters, and the story line was very interesting. Could have been expanded by including a little more about the two main character's backgrounds, and courtship. I look forward to reading more of Ms Hunter's work.

This is a wonderful introduction to a new historical romance series! I love the main characters in this novella. Margaretta and Nash are extremely well developed. They are each dealing with very real emotional issues. I love the fact that they have both found a true friend in Mrs. Lancaster. She is the stalwart support and encouragement that everyone needs when they are going through intensely difficult times. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

Started off interesting if implausible but dwindled to slow and illogical. Remember liking her previous series better. Some good research, which I appreciated, but inevitable mistakes.

I absolutely love Kristi Ann Hunter's books, and this novella which starts her new Haven Manor series was wonderful. Hunter's sense of humor tickles my funny bone and adds so much enjoyment to her stories. The setting for the story was interesting, and the premise for the series is very creative. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

A wonderful novella that captures time and place. Well written so that it draws you into Margaretta and Nash’s story. Lots of surprises in a short story, but is complete and keeps you engaged. I look forward to the novel of Katherine’s story and hope it includes more of the characters I grew to love in this novella. Impressive is the word I use to describe this story. I received a complimentary copy from the author. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

I loved this novella! It is an introduction to the Haven Manor series by Kristi Ann Hunter. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more books in this new series! Margaretta is desperate to get out of London and to somewhere safe where her husband's family hopefully can't find her. Nash Banfield loves his quiet life in his small town and knows something is off about Margaretta as soon as she steps out of the mail coach. Even though he doesn't want anyone or anything to disturb his organized life he doesn't seem to be able to walk away from Margaretta when she seems to really need his help and is more than just a little surprised when he develops feelings for her.

What a wonderful novella about trust, acceptance, and living life to the fullest. Margaretta Fortescue leaves London for protection from her brother-in-law after the death of her husband. She arrives in Marlborough looking for her friend who had disappeared under suspicious circumstances. However, she had received a letter from Katherine that came from this small town. Perhaps she will find her friend there. Nash Banfield is a local solicitor who takes an interest in Margaretta out of concern for the local store owner, Mrs. Lancaster. To keep Mrs. Lancaster safe from this unknown woman, Nash starts visiting the store to talk to Margaretta and try to find out who she is and who she's running from. Mrs. Lancaster has taken pity on Margaretta and allows her to use an upstairs room in exchange for cleaning around the store. What takes place between these three people is fun and heartwarming. This is a very well thought out story by Kristi Ann Hunter. The characters are well defined and the banter is fun to read. If you like clean, historical, Christian romance, you will love this Novella. Enjoy!

Margaretta Fortescue steps off the mail coach in Marlbourgh, England with the purpose of finding her friend Katherine. Katherine has disappeared from society and Margaretta has reasons to want to disappear as well. She walks with determination in the opposite direction of the inn in search of a less visible place to stay. She sees a woman sweeping in front of a store just as her stomach reminds her it's been hours since she has eaten, so she steps inside to buy some food. Nick Banfield, a local solicitor, wonders why a young woman would avoid the inn after stepping off the coach with a valise. He watches as she puts up the hood of a distinctive yellow cloak and walks directly for his widowed friend Mrs. Lancaster's store. He had made a promise to watch out for Mrs. Lancaster who he feels is easily taken advantage of by those seeking help. He decides he needs to make a trip to the store to check things out. Mrs. Lancaster makes it a practice of sweeping outside her store at the time of day that coaches arrive. She believes the Lord leads people in need to her. Margaretta is the next person she knows she is to help. This is a wonderful preview for the upcoming Haven Manor Series. I enjoyed this very much and am looking forward to the new series. There is a 2 chapter preview of A Defense of Honor that will make you want more.

I love this author. What ever she writes, I want to read. Kristi gives us just enough in this well written novella "A Search for Refuge", to wet our appetite. This novella is Margaretta's story. The first book of the Haven Manor Series, "A Defense of Honor" is Kit's story, coming out in June. I'm not sure I can wait until then. We will also learn about Daphne and Jess later on, not sure when they will be coming out. From Kristi's web page : "The Haven Manor series follows a group of women who take what could have been a life-crushing circumstance and turned it into an opportunity to help desperate women and their children from the same fate. Their pasts may have brought these women here, but God has an amazing future in store for them." You don't want to miss this series. Even if you are not a novella reader (sorry, but I don't get that), you want to read this one.

Interesting characters that draw you into their story from page one. The women in this narrative are strong, with big hearts facing big situations. I think it's always a little tricky to get the right balance of plot, character arc, and chemistry in a novella. The brevity of the format requires providing information and detail quickly in order to get the story told, while still allowing for development to keep the reader's interest. A Search for Refuge is a solid example of how a novella can be done well. Tight writing, romantic sparks, and plenty of "show, don't tell" in the delivery. This tale shows that we're in for another delightful series from author Kristi Ann Hunter.
