Overview

Secret shopper Josie Marcus can blend in at any store, but disappearing isn’t an option when her best friend’s husband is suspected of murder…

Josie has an eye for the finer things in life. Unfortunately, her wallet can’t keep up—as a single mom and mystery shopper, she won’t be moving out of St. Louis’s suburbs anytime soon. Good thing her best friend Alyce Bohannon doesn’t mind sharing a taste of the high life in her posh gated community, Wood Winds. But death comes at every price point and when Alyce’s neighbor, well-heeled scarf designer Halley Hardwicke, is murdered, the neighborhood buzzes with ugly gossip.

Talk is cheap…until the detectives begin questioning Alyce’s husband, Jake, about the crime. So Josie decides to do a little sleuthing of her own. With Alyce’s help, Josie goes undercover in swanky suburbia to unravel the secrets of the cliquey Wood Winds wives, untangle Jake from the murder investigation, and uncover the truth before the killer snags another victim.

Mystery shopper Josie Marcus is back and better than ever in Elaine Viets newest series.Josie has the kind of job most people only dream of having. She is a mystery shopper. She gets paid to shop and report on the visit. Sounds like fun, but it has its drawbacks. One is, single mon Josie, is never going to be able to afford the thousand dollar,Haily Hardwick designer scarves, she is looking at. And the other is,her boss,Harry, perpetual Akins dieting Harry. The man is a suttle as a chain saw. Now Harry has it out for Josie, big time. He gives her all the worse shopping jobs out there. Bad for Josie, good for us. There are a lot of laughs for the reader couresty of Josie's assignments from Hell.Oh yeah, there is also a murder, danger AND Josie's blind dates set up by mom.I highly recommend this and Elaine's other mystery series "the dead end job". One more thing, in spite of the hot pink covers, it is suitable for men.

Josie Marcus is a single mother who pays a nominal rent by living in her mother¿s house. She has known much heartache and tragedy but she is also best friends to Alyce who lives in an affluent gated community filled with mansions and villas while she lives in a blue collar neighborhood. She doesn¿t like Alyce¿s husband Jake who cheated on his wife but tolerates him out of her friendship for his spouse.------------ When Alyce¿s neighbor is murdered in what looks like a carjacking, a black male is arrested while running through the mall. The police are forced to let him go when evidence proves him innocent then the police turn their eyes on Jake as a suspect. Circumstantial evidence points to him having an affair with Halley Hardwicke and witnesses saw them arguing before her death. Alyce knows that Jake is innocent of murder and asks Josie to help. She starts nosing around and almost gets killed by a cold blooded killer who has gotten away with murder twice.------------------ There are two heroes in this book: Alyce for sticking by her man even though he doesn¿t deserve it or her and Josie who goes the extra mile to help her friend. There are some very funny scenes as Josie is mystery shopping at greasy fast food places and is inundated with hundreds of packages she never ordered by someone who wants her busy returning packages and magazine subscriptions. Elaine Viets has written a well thought out who done it starring a sleuth who is totally believable and a bit quirky.---------------- Harriet Klausner
