Overview

Atticus by Sawyer Bennett, S. Bennett

This is a love story between...
A woman and a man
A woman and her family
A woman and her friends
A woman and a very special dog that led her to her happily ever after.

Through the haze of vodka and self-loathing, Hazel Roundtree saw the poor creature lying in a ditch.

One brown eye. One blue.
Covered in mud and crying from pain, the puppy was desperately trying to free itself from a hopeless situation.

She almost kept walking by. She had her own problems and besides... no one had ever stopped to help her.

Who we're ultimately meant to be is a journey without end, but there's always a defined start...

Hazel had no idea the dog would be her beginning, her second chance, the miracle she never saw coming. She named him Atticus. He grew up to be a very bad--and completely awesome--dog. He took Hazel on a life-changing journey filled with mischievous adventure to find her happily ever after. In the end, Hazel grew up to be completely awesome, too.

5 Star Review of Atticus (A Woman’s Journey With The World’s Worst Behaved Dog) by S Bennett   They say dog is “man’s” best friend and the story of Atticus shows how true this is. Atticus is a story of love and hope. Hazel Roundtree has hit rock bottom, when she stumbles across an injured dog. Her decision to help the dog changes her life, a decision that saves Hazel from herself and brings joy and chaos into her life. Atticus had me in tears, both happy and sad. It also had me snort laughing at times thanks to his antics and the mischief Atticus gets up to. Hazel is living day to day, struggling to survive, often through a vodka induced haze. However with Atticus by her side, Hazel faces her life and together they explore the journey that is their life together. As I have come to expect from a Sawyer Bennett book, it was well extremely well written and the story line amazing. I was invested from the start. Atticus is a unique book about love and family, family that does not have to be related by blood, but family nevertheless. A story about how an act of kindness can change the course of your life forever.

Sawyer Bennett has once again shown us what a talented and diverse author she is with her fur babies tales in Atticus: A Woman’s Journey With The Worlds Worst Behaved Dog, I’m not sure I have the words to describe just how much I loved Atticus and his tales. Hazel Roundtree has not had an easy life she seems to stumble from disaster to the next from dropping out of high school to being dumped for younger models and now she finds herself sleeping on her friend Charmin’s couch. A late night drunken walk leads Hazel to a ditch where she finds a puppy caught up in barbed wire not only is the puppy trapped he is scared and all skin and bones so Hazel knows what needs to be done rescue him and get him to a vet so she ends up sleeping on the doorstep of Dr Oley W Peel waiting for the elderly vet to open up. What follows is a story of friendships and love in places we would never normally be looking, this book has so many feel good factors about it, I laughed and I cried as I followed Hazel and Atticus’s journey but every tear I shed was well worth it because this book really stole a piece of my heart. This is a must read for all Sawyer Bennett fans and for all fur baby lovers. Brilliant read.

WOW, what a truly heartfelt and endearing book. When life gives you lemons, Hazel beats them with a stick and then squeezes them to make lemonade. I've never enjoyed a book as much as I did this one. Hazel and Oley are truly the "odd couple" but you throw Atticus into the mix and you really have one wild ride!!

My review title: A superbly written novel! ★¸¸.•*¨*•★Spoiler Free★•*¨*•.¸¸★ What did I like about this fiction novel? Entertaining / Wonderful characters / Witty / Original / Page-turner / Realistic / HEA I am so stunned that I forgot to post a written review the minute I finished this wonderful story in July 2018. It was a huge oversight on my part because everything about Hazel Roundtree's journey to become a more self-realized person was fantastic! The fact that it included Atticus, one of the most endearing canine characters ever written in a novel, and a few other key supporting characters made it all the more special. Every since I completed this book, I recommend it every chance I get. In fact, I just recommended it today to a friend on GoodReads which is how I discovered I had yet to review it at all. My final verdict: Read this irresistibly entertaining book!

Such a good book! Make sure you have plenty of tissues. I do wish we could have seen more romance with Jack but still amazing!

Sawyer Bennett is one of my favorite authors. This book “Atticus” is another heart melting, soul touching story. I loved it and would give more stars if I could.

Atticus is a story about how love can change lives. I enjoyed having the story told by both Hazel and Atticus. I laughed and cried while reading the book and I haven’t done that in a while. Thanks for a great book.

"Any man who wants my Hazel would have to make her as happy as I´ve seen on a very rare few occasions where she shines from the inside out with euphoric joy.If a man would ever give that to Hazel on a consistent basis, I might just have to give him a chance." Hazel abandoned her parents and her life to run away with a seal. Months later after suffering a miscarriage, she was single, without an academic degree and with nowhere to go. Her dream was to find the prince charming and live the fairy tale: to marry and be happily ever after taking care of her sweet husband, doing all household tasks in her house with the white fence. Darren Roundtree was the fulfillment of that dream. Until betraying her and driving her out of the house. Again without a roof and without a pair, Hazel spends her days sleeping on a couch, her nights working as a bartender and her breaks with drinks and men, still in search of the perfect husband who will make her happy. I started the book without much expectation. It is narrated in the first person and one of the narrators is the friendly canine. Atticus, a trickster Bernese mountain. This animal narrator makes the narrative interesting, cute and unusual. At some point in the reading, you realize that all of Hazel's problems reside in her very low self-esteem. Because she can not love herself, the protagonist makes lousy choices and becomes dependent on love relationships. That most do not end well or barely start. The encounter with the little cub, changes her life forever. One step at a time. Gradually it improves her choices and attitudes, rebuilds her self image. More than that, she allows herself to help others and be helped in return, transforming her life. The presence of Atticus directs her to a life with purpose and hope. If the beginning is taken by the total lack of hope, perspective and even some contempt, the development is dramatic and at the same time funny, while the ending is emotional and full of tenderness. A great reading that speaks about friendship, purpose and happiness, in a light, comforting and unique way.

I love all of Sawyer Bennett’s books so I knew it would be a good book. But, I questioned how it would play out. Seriously, a book with points of view from the dog??? What a risk!! But I can honestly say it was a beautiful story! The points of view were shared between the dog, Atticus and its owner, Hazel. It starts out with a down trodden, unlucky in life Hazel, barely surviving. Her lack of motivation and willingness to just accept the scraps life were throwing her were a huge turn off. But as the story builds and other characters are introduced, who are each fighting their own demons, you become embroiled with these characters, fighting and cheering for them. Hazel’s relationship with Atticus is the catalyst for her self-growth and self-realization that she is worthy. As the relationship with Atticus and the others grow so does her confidence. Her kind heart brings out the good in others and creates a cohesive circle of friends. Being witness to the rebuilding of the lives and relationships of these characters was truly beautiful. It is a magnificently told story.

Atticus: A Woman's Journey with the World's Worst Behaved Dog is a standalone book. If you've read other books by this author, you know she writes a fabulous hot, steamy, page turning book. This is going to be nothing like them, with the exception of page turning. This book really hit home in a lot of ways, I found a lot of similarities between Hazel and myself, the journey she went through to find herself. Be prepared this book is going to make you ugly cry, I would keep a box of Kleenex's handy. I was more prepared for the comedic stunts of a wayward dog. I can relate, I have a Newfoundland that sounds like it is Atticus's brother from another mother. Good to know I'm not the only one with a destructive attention seeking, bratty dog! The book will make you laugh and cry. The book is very well written and the story line flowed, it was impossible to put down- surprising since I only read romance. There is a minute amount in the book, but it's not the focus and something that doesn't happen until way into the book. I loved the friendship that developed between Hazel and Oley, that then included Bernard and others into the fold. Watching the dynamic between Oley and Hazel was very interesting as well as how Atticus helped change Hazel's life, and helped her to find herself. It is obvious the thought and attention that went into this book, as well as the depth of the book. As the relationships evolve (not romantic type) and you learn more of the backstory, it was hard to not despise Oley's children. All the other characters you meet it is hard not to like them. The characters and their interactions felt very real and the situations realistic. This book was outstanding and was an easy to give 5 star rating. Though I hope no more are written like this because I used over half a box of Kleenex ugly crying. You've been forewarned! Hope this helps! Happy Reading!!!

A change of pace from Sawyer's normal books. Don't expect to find a hot and heavy romance here. Atticus is amazing and reminds me of my dog. I really loved Hazel's journey to finding her way with Atti by her side. This is an absolutely touching story. It's beautifully done.

All the feels... This book is so much more than you think it will be. It has love in all its forms...love of friends, unconditional love of a pet, family love - both by blood and by circumstance, as well as a little bit of romantic love. What was refreshing is that the romance takes a back seat to the wonderfulness that is Atticus. There was so much to love about this story. There is Atticus who may be the world's worst behaved dog (but not really), but he's also one of the awesomest!! Smart, witty, and the best thing that ever happened to Hazel (and vice versa). Part 1 starts with my favorite quote, so I knew this was going to be another Bennett winner. Atticus totally lives up to his namesake. Atticus lives by the motto of no regrets! We could all learn from him about how to go about life. The growth of the characters is the true genius of this book - from Oley who enters Hazel's life thanks to Atticus to Charmin who has a lot of growing up to do and to Bernard who becomes a special part of Hazel's life. This book will make you laugh, fill your heart with joy and cry - oh the tears. Dang you S. Bennett - again all the feels. My favorite quotes are: "Thank you, Atti. For bringing Hazel. Into my life." "I'm pretty sure I was put on this earth for the sole purpose of making Hazel who she's supposed to be." The love of Atticus and Hazel will be felt for years to come. This is such a special book that I can't rave enough about it. Life is a journey and what a journey this was! I voluntarily requested and reviewed an uncorrected advance reader copy.

This is an amazing story of life. There's no other way to describe it. Hazel's life was a drunken/stoned POS until she comes across Atticus caught up in barbed wire in a culvert. And so the journey begins. Atticus, and his crotchety old vet, help Hazel to see who she can be. Oley also sees how much life he still has left in him thanks to Hazel and Atticus. Yes, it's a journey of finding yourself and your self-worth, but it also takes the reader on a journey of love, aging and death. The story of this book hit me extremely hard since it hit so close to home. I am currently dealing with the aging and death aspect of everything as well as a troublesome pup. I felt like the author can see my every day trials and tribulations and she portrayed them perfectly. I've never read a fiction book that is this close to real life. With that being said, you will cry and you will laugh and you will shake your head in dismay and disbelief. But you will definitely walk away emotional.

WOW! Oh my goodness, just WOW! If there was any way to give this more than 5 stars I'm down for that. This is by far the best book this year!!!! Hazel is stumbling through life and not at all surviving when she hears a whine that turns out to be a puppy in a culvert. After rescuing that puppy she takes him to the local vet and waits for him to open the office. This sets off a whole spiral of wonder. Did Hazel rescue a puppy or did the puppy rescue her? Whatever the result was it changes the lives of everyone in their immediate and extended lives. This book made me laugh and it made me cry and it made me look at my dogs with eyes wide open and a nod (truth). The many characters surrounding Hazel and Atticus bring much joy to this story and add just the right amount of charm. This should be on everyone must read list for this year and every year in the future! **Received this ARC for review**

Wow! Where to start? I loved this book. At first I wasn't sure. I didn't particularly the Hazel and didn't think I would grow to like her. But just as he was supposed to Atticus changed it all! This book was so well written I felt like I knew them all personally by the end. This book is written in a very unique way and truly pulled me in especially the second half. Kind of would have liked seeing more of hazel and Jack but that is the romance loved in me.

This book wasn't just about the big adorable fluffy dog on the cover it was about .. loneliness, hope, dreams and LOVE !! When you put all of those components together you get Hazel and Atticus all rolled into one big sappy story !! When Hazel finally meets Atticus she needs him and he needs her just as much. Reading this book in both of there points of view will make you realize that sometime's a person doesn't need another human to love maybe that just need the attention and need from an animal. I am not sure if it IS because I am an animal lover or that I have a puppy that means the world to me or is just of course Sawyers style of writing that ALWAYS grabs at your heart strings .. and this book will do it to you too !! GET HIM NOW !! LOVED IT !!

This is a beautifully written story. I don't think I've read a book where one of the perspectives was an animal but it really worked. I laughed, cringed, cried and felt a sense of peace and hope. The characters were real with their personalities and flaws. This book spoke of the events and people or animals that are placed on your road of life...of the bumps and detours that you take and the power they have to change your course if you let them.

Atticus is certainly a journey and with it Sawyer Bennett delivers an entirely delightful tale about a smart and ornery dog who gave his owner purpose and unconditional love helping her build her confidence and self-respect. Hazel Roundtree was a high school-dropout bartender who thought herself worthless and without aim until one day she came across a “puppy in a ditch, wrapped in barbed wire, freezing and starving.” She was going leave him. She could barely take care of herself, much less another life. She decided to save him and in the end he saved her too because having Atticus depend on her forced Hazel to grow up along with him. And he didn’t just bring her love, he brought mischief, laughter and good friends along the way. Bennett knows how to pen an appealing story with addictive adventure harmonized with heartfelt moments. Atticus’ entries are fun and engaging, he’s curious and naughty but also attentive, caring and smart. Even though she has a lot to work on, Hazel is a sensitive and ultimately strong woman who just needed a push in the right directing and a few breaks. I was completely captivated not just by Hazel and Atticus, but by every person she came in contact after she found him. I loved how Hazel grew and matured and even through heartbreak, she found true happiness. While I normally read romance novels and I’ve read a lot by Sawyer Bennett, this is a story of a different nature, it’s about kindness, finding oneself, redemption and family, and of course there’s also romantic love! It will fill you with all the best feelings from start to finish. I laughed and cried and smiled. If you’re looking for a feel good read that’s sweet and touching, look no further. Atticus is a women’s literature novel by Sawyer Bennett. It is a standalone story told by dual points of view (Hazel & Atticus the dog) with a happy ending.

This was delightful to read. A fantastic story that was fun, heartwarming, heartbreaking, uplifting and full of love. I have been a huge fan of Sawyer Bennett for quite awhile but this sweet, story about a dog and their owner, swept me away. Hazel Roundtree is floundering. A high school dropout who was down on her luck, unable to take care of herself. Until she found a hurt, cute, lovable, and trouble making, Bernese Mountain Puppy. This puppy changes her whole world, filling it with love, antics and bringing the right people into her life, All for the better. This story will fill your heart. I laughed I cried, and I fell in love with Atticus and this story and so will you. Get your copy now! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Atticus was cute, funny, happy, sad, and everything in between. I've never read a book like this, it's definitely unique. I've always loved chapters from a pet's perspective, and that was still the case for Atticus. Atticus is an adorable and trouble making dog who is just so lovable. I loved getting his take on things and how he views the world, it was hilarious! I'm pretty sure I laughed out loud for every single one of his chapters. The whole book is an emotional journey as Hazel goes from the worst days of her life to the best days of her life. I enjoyed seeing how much a cute, mischievous little puppy can change someone's life, and I believed it. Sawyer did a wonderful job writing this book. The storyline was emotional and real, with characters that you could empathize with and root for. This book shows you to treasure the ones you love, because you never know what tomorrow brings. I also really enjoyed that Atticus is based on her own dog, Atticus, and all the crazy yet adorable things he does. I could tell that Sawyer put a lot of care and dedication into this book to make it what it is. This book had me close to tears, but it's sort of a fitting end for the characters. I think Atticus will stay with me for a while.

I first have to say I am a sucker for romance novels - that's why I love Sawyer Bennett. This romance is slightly different; Atticus is about a girl who falls in love with a dog - the worst dog in history, but a dog that will take her on an amazing journey of discovery, self-realization, heartache and ultimately love. Hazel Roundtree is down on her luck. Living on her friend's couch - her husband left her and she is barely making enough money bartending to survive. Then one day she rescues the cutest puppy, takes him to a vet and then the adventure really starts. Through Hazel and Atticus's adventure, they discover a new life - one that never would have come to be for Hazel if she hadn't found the helpless puppy. I love that we get Hazel and Atticus's POV - Atticus thinks like a real person and I have been convinced for years that our pets think like we do. This just solidifies that for me. The story is filled with so much emotion that I found myself laughing and crying sometimes on the same page - that is the magic of Sawyer Bennetts writing. There are fantastic secondary characters people that help Hazel and in some case are real jerks but all influence her and of course Atticus is there every step of the way. If you are looking for a different, amazing and lovely romance look no further than Atticus. Sawyer Bennett knocks this one out of the park.

What a truly delightful, beautiful, heartwarming and touching story. Hazel, Oley, and Atticus together made their lives complete. Each was missing something the others filled. Atticus changed Hazel's life the day she rescued him. She was going nowhere in her life and Atticus somehow put her on the path of survival and love. She didn't know the first thing about raising a dog but somehow they figured it out. He even was able to bring Oley into their lives on that day. Atticus turned their world around for the better and became a part of them. This story started with so much loneliness and progressed to so much joy and love. So many special characters each added to the bond that was created with a fiesty dog. This story was so heartwarming that I found myself sitting with my own dog while reading it petting her and looking at her and wondering if she was thinking things that Atticus did. I will never look at her the same way again. This is a story that will touch your heart and never let you forget the special bond a dog can have with their human.

Atticus is most certainly a love story, but not in the usual sense of the term. It’s a unique tale that illustrates the power of unconditional love and the fact that the only way that a person can have/find/hold onto love is if she loves herself first, understanding her true worth based on who she is to herself and not necessarily as other people see her, and while that may take time and it may cause heartache and pain, it’s essential to living a full and happy life…it’s essential in order to revel in the ordinariness of life and understand one’s true place…one’s true path regardless of any road blocks or bad experiences that may have to be dealt with in order to get there. The two main characters of Atticus are Hazel Roundtree and Atticus, her dog who almost wasn’t her dog because she contemplated not helping the pup when she found him. But in deciding to stop and help Atticus even though no one ever stopped to help her, she finds out the true meaning of unconditional love and while Atticus isn’t the most behaved dog in the world, he’s hers and he teaches her, not only how to take care of him and seek out help when she can’t do it alone, but he also shows her how to love herself…how to care for herself when it seems like no-one else will or can. Atticus gives Hazel hope; he gives her a caring companion; he gives her a best friend who understands more than she’ll ever know. Atticus gives her a purpose…a second chance. He helps her find herself and in doing so, he allows her to be ready when someone comes into her life that’s worthy of her mind, her heart, and her soul. Relationships are a necessity in life and just when Hazel thinks she has no-one and nothing, she finds the one animal she never knew she needed, Atticus, and through him, Hazel finds a whole cast of characters who become as essential to her as Atticus, and it’s with their help…their guidance that this dog and his owner learn to traverse through this thing called life and find a way to do more than just survive…more than just exist and that opens up a world of possibilities for them both. S. Bennett does a fantastic job of creating both a light-hearted and an emotional feel to this story, which is fitting considering that that’s how life works…there are highs and lows and ups and downs throughout the course of one’s existence and it’s in those moments, both the good and the bad, that people learn who they really are and what they’re really capable of, and boy are Hazel and Atticus worth more than they think! 4.5 Poison Apples
