Overview

Beard With Me' is the origin story of Billy Winston and Scarlet St. Claire (aka Claire McClure) and is just the beginning of their epic love story.

No one is better at surviving than Scarlet St. Claire and making the best out of circumstances beyond her control is Scarlet's specialty. In an apocalyptic situation, she'd be the last person on earth, hermitting like a pro, singing along to her CD Walkman, and dancing like no one is watching.

Scarlet is clever, Scarlet is careful, and Scarlet is smart . . . except when it comes to Billy Winston.

No one is better at fighting than Billy Winston and raging against his circumstances—because nothing is beyond his control—is Billy's specialty. In an apocalyptic situation, he'd be the first person on earth to lead others to safety, overcome catastrophe, or die trying.

Billy is fearless, Billy is disciplined, and Billy is honorable . . . except when it comes to Scarlet St. Claire.

BEARD WITH ME is the sixth instalment in Penny Reid’s contemporary, adult WINSTON BROTHERS romance series focusing on the Winston family of siblings. This is the backstory to to Scarlet St. Claire and Billy Winston’s love story. BEARD WITH ME is a prequel storyline that can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Told from dual first person perspectives (Billy and Scarlet) BEARD WITH ME focuses on the early relationship between Scarlet St. Claire and Billy Winston, children of some of the most vial members of the Iron Wraith MC. Approximately twenty years earlier sixteen year old Billy Winston fell in love with fourteen year old Scarlett St. Claire , a young girl much older than her years; a young woman who has suffered greatly at the hands of your abusive father. Scarlet would find safety living alone in the back woods but her place of refuge would soon be discovered by Billy Winston. Billy, along with one-time football hero Ben McClure, would become guardian and protector of Scarlet St. Claire but no amount of heroism was about to protect our story line hero. BEARD WITH ME is a well written, detailed, dark and heart breaking story; a tale of fated lovers whose dysfunctional families battle to destroy what’s left of their beating hearts. Penny Reid pulls the read into a story of survival; of abuse and terror; of friendship, love, betrayal and hate. BEARD WITH ME reveals the heartache and struggles of the Winston family siblings; their bruised and battered mother; and of a young girl’s desperate act to save herself from the ultimate betrayal.

I seem to be constantly immersed in all things Penny Reid these days, and that is not a bad place to be. Although after finishing this I totally get why people were so devastated after reading it. Now knowing it is going to be resolved, hopefully in the next book, Beard Necessities, helps my little broken heart a tiny bit. I loved this origin story about Billy and Scarlet. Seeing their love develop, and then seeing them have to say goodbye to it. I loved getting a look at all the Winston brothers as well as Ashley when they were young. Seeing the whole town, all the family members, the other people we've heard of in bits and pieces, it was so much fun and I just wanted to be constantly immersed in the story and the town and all that was going on. Even with all that we were given, I'd have been happy with more and more! Such a lovely, emotional, sweet, intense, heartbreaking story. I can't say too much, don't want to give away anything, but I did cry a little while finishing this up sitting at lunch at work.

Beard with Me explains EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING I tell you – but especially why the Winston’s are the way they are most notably Billy and Cletus. There are no words to describe the events of Beard with Me as it provokes so many emotions, no words just feels. My heart ached so, so, so much. Even at the age of 16, Billy takes his responsibilities seriously, to the point of giving him a bit of a martyr complex. Yet, it is his innate sense of justice and compassion that drives his actions and decisions even when they are not what is best for himself but are best for the people he cares about the most. He is the superhero of big brothers. I honestly don’t know what to say about Scarlet; no-one should ever have to endure the things Scarlet did. At 14 Scarlet is more mature than anyone that age should be; strong, independent and determined. Yet she also manages to retain her optimism and empathy. She is a very special person. Scarlet and Billy’s world are more entangled than they initial realise due to their connection to the motorcycle gang, The Iron Wraiths, of which both of their fathers hold high positions. Their families lives are basically run by their association to the Wraiths, and mostly not in a good way. Knowing the future for Billy, Scarlet and Cletus, their shared history is a tender wound that needs to be cleaned by all the truth being revealed. Let’s hope there is a happily ever after in store for Billy because he has just surpassed Cletus as my main Winston ❤

Captivating Favorite Quotes: Cletus had the decency to squirm in his seat. "Lie is such an ugly word. I prefer fiction.” I was the only child of Razor Dennings that he’d claimed. His recognition of me as his spawn meant I would forever be followed by a cloud in the shape of a tornado with horns. Billy Winston had somehow tapped into the thermostat of my body and set it to Arizona in the summer. I’d never been to Arizona, but I was pretty sure they had those days where it got so hot the thermometers broke. Ss my momma’s friend Ellie Leffersbee said whenever she saw or heard or experienced something she found momentous, I was stirred like a gin and tonic and shaken like a martini. I would’ve called him a sonofabitch, but his mother was a nice lady. Cletus, looking thoughtful and not an ounce afraid, scratched his jaw as best he could given the fact his arms were being held. “No, Darrell. You are my role model, obviously. It has always been my sincerest desire to be an aging impotent biker with dysentery and the laughingstock of East Tennessee. Teach me your ways, Diseased-Wang Kenobi. You’re my only hope.” My Review: I adore Penny Reid and would worship at an altar of her discarded printer ink cartridges. Her writing has a distinct and perceptive eloquence with a perfect blend of entertaining levity, thoughtful insights, compelling drama, heart squeezes, looming peril, and extra quirky and highly endearing characters. She gives each unique character a profound depth, which illuminates their strengths as well as exposing their vulnerabilities. Beard With Me ranks as one of her best and is one of those rare books that warrant a ten-star rating, despite the lack of closure for the main characters’ storyline. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment.

Flying way back to when Billy Winston was 16, Beard with Me follows his life at this time, and how his natural protection impulse is displayed not only amongst his family but advances towards Scarlet St Claire. The unobtrusive wood fairy. It was a great insight into how skipping back to the times when Green Valley was formed, as we know it in the Winston Brothers series. This story took a very different tone to what we know, but played out to be paramount in filling the gaps. Scarlet’s noble existence amongst the chaos of her upbringing was incomparable. She was fearful, yet bold. She was knowing, yet naive. She was only fourteen, yet had lived a hundred lives. Billy recognised that and whilst his own attachment to his siblings and mother, verged on wide scale protection, he ensured he had the time and patience with the only girl who had stirred the real in him. Whilst we saw these character and their humility at a young age, I look forward to understanding their bigger story.. Can’t wait infact. Totally absorbing, mesmerising..you had me at “Nothing takes the taste out of peanut butter quite like unrequited love.” Complimentary copy received with joy in exchange for an honest review

For fans of Penny Reid, Beard with Me gives a great background to the beloved characters of her 'Winston Brothers' series. Told from the perspective of starcrossed lovers, Billy and Scarlet, the narrative takes readers through the trials of a pair of teenagers who just want to be left alone. An emotional read from beginning to end, 'Reiders' will find themselves combing through the next 6 books - along with her published short stories - looking for the bread crumbs leading to her penultimate novel, 'Beard Necessities' set to be released later this fall. For those new to Penny Reid, it can be read alone or as a companion to the series. However you read it, it's worth picking up and embracing the emotions it conjures up.

Beard with Me by Penny Reid is the sixth book in her wonderful Winston Brothers series. An emotional roller-coaster backstory of the teenage versions of Billy Winston and Claire McClure or, Scarlet St. Claire as she was known back then. Painful and emotional - This book ripped my heart open for all the things that COULD have been for these two but never were. This had me going back through the previous FIVE Winston books and searching for mentions of Claire and re-reading the interactions with Billy as adults. Definitely a love story but definitely not a romance. I was rocked to my core by the depth of suffering these two went through. Seeing the younger stoic Billy Winston and understanding why he is the way he is. Marveling at the progress Claire has made in her life to not only return to Green Valley after what she suffered at her fathers hands but to thrive and live and be an active member of society. Just... WOW! I was excited and eager for Billy's book, Beard Necessities, before but now, after reading this backstory, I am on tenterhooks waiting for November to roll around. If you are a Penny Reid / Green Valley fan this book is a must read. Enjoy!

5 Stars - Not a Romance but an EPIC LOVE STORY You absolutely do not have to read Beard with Me to read any of the Winston Brother’s books as it is “the origin story”. That said you must read it as it sheds a whole new light on a lot of stuff. Especially Billy Winston. I must confess that he never was one of my favorite brothers… I thought of him as being kind of cold and aloof in a snobbish way. HOW VERY WRONG I WAS!!!! Now I need to reread all the books because now that I know what I know it is imperative that I look at things again, and I’m pretty sure NOTHING IS GOING TO BE THE SAME! Although this book would be classified strictly as YA, I have to say this does not feel like a YA book. The reason is that neither Billy nor Scarlet had the luxury of actually being “young” in any other than the biological sense. These two had gone through and went through so much, I’m actually amazed that they’re alive, much less functioning human beings. I really don’t want to say much more, other than I absolutely LOVED Billy. I absolutely LOVED Scarlet. I FLOVED Billy and Scarlet together and I can’t wait for them to get the HEA they earned and deserve. Now I’ll end this with a warning. If you get red, puffy crying face do not read this before leaving for work or if you’ll need to show your face in public. This book will wreck you. It will break your heart and make it bleed. It will grab your innards and flip-flop them willy-nilly from start to finish. And you will still absolutely love every freaking second of it. Beard with Me is a totally must-read book that I couldn’t put down even when I absolutely had to. It will make you feel everything and more and you will no doubt need a box of Kleenex at your side. And although I wish I could read Beard Necessities RIGHT THIS MINUTE, I can be glad (if I make a real big effort) to have the time and reread the whole series in preparation for it… So, you know what I’ll be doing over the next few weeks. *I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book*

There is no other way to describe this book but to say it’s EPIC! If you have been following this series like I have, you will know all about the brooding Billy. You will also know that there is a back story between him and Claire McClune / Scarlet St Claire. Tension has been so thick with them in the previous books that you can’t help but need to know what happened surrounding their tale. This edition is the whole background and lead up to their love story. It doesn’t end on a cliffhanger but it will leaving you with plenty of longing and wondering how can it all be fixed. It’s starts from the very begging of all the siblings stories and it ties them all in together with snippets linking each book / sibling. I loved that, they way Billy was integral in all their lives in such a positive way. One thing you should be warned about, and will know this fact if you’re a fan of this series, is that Scarlet and Billy both suffer at the hands of their fathers who are in a MC. And it’s brutal and sad. It is told to us in a remarkable way that you have this undying compassion for them as it’s so tragic. It gives you plenty of insight as to the young adults they were and how it has shaped their later lives. I have always adored Billy for his loyalty and family values but this book cements my opinion solid. He is simple the best person you would want on your side. It is why all the other siblings look up to him for guidance and reassurance. Scarlet was a sweet teen with difficult circumstances that had aged her into adulthood early. She knew she was raised differently but still took pride in where she was going in life. She was an extremely strong young woman and I’m eager to read more about her in the next book. I have cherished each of these brothers for so many distinctive reasons but Billy will now be my favorite Winston. I’m hurting but I know this next book will ease all my worries and I’m betting this couple will have their HEA in the end and it will be valorous. * Reviewed by Monique for JoandIsaLoveBooks Blog.

Oh my me, Ms. Reid...this origin story set in the Winston Brothers universe is just everything. This is story tells us more of the beginnings of the Winston family, it tells the heartbreaking story of Billy Winston and Scarlet St. Claire. This is not heart and flowers and happily ever afters.  This story made me cry and made me appreciate Ms. Reid's writing even more than before.  Ms. Reid writes a smart, sad and such a believable world that I can actually picture myself there in Green Valley.  I can "see" the forest which poor Scarlet has to live in.  Ms. Reid writes so beautifully that you can feel the characters anguish, excitement and struggles like they are your own. Ms. Reid brings some levity to the story by way of the Winston siblings,  especially Cletus! I fell in love even harder with him throughout this story.  Now I have read all of the Winston Brothers series up until this point, but trust me if you haven't yet read any of theses stories (And why haven't you?!?) you can definitely start with this story and go forward from there. I cannot gush enough about Ms. Reid's epic talent at storytelling!  She is gonna squeeze your heart hard with this story...it's gonna put your feelings through the wringer in the most phenomenal way.
