Behind the Scenes (Daylight Falls Series #1) by Dahlia Adler

High school senior Ally Duncan's best friend may be the Vanessa Park - star of TV's hottest new teen drama - but Ally's not interested in following in her BFF's Hollywood footsteps. In fact, the only thing Ally's ever really wanted is to go to Columbia and study abroad in Paris. But when her father's mounting medical bills threaten to stop her dream in its tracks, Ally nabs a position as Van's on-set assistant to get the cash she needs.

Spending the extra time with Van turns out to be fun, and getting to know her sexy co-star Liam is an added bonus. But when the actors' publicist arranges for Van and Liam to date for the tabloids just after he and Ally share their first kiss, Ally will have to decide exactly what role she's capable of playing in their world of make believe. If she can't play by Hollywood's rules, she may lose her best friend, her dream future, and her first shot at love.

Totally fun, swoony read. I especially loved the lady BFFs at the center of the story.

I've had BEHIND THE SCENES on my TBR list for upwards of two years now, and I can honestly say that it was well worth the wait. At the heart of the story is Ally and Vanessa's friendship, which remained believable for me even as Vanessa's star rose as a result of her new TV role. There was a nice balance struck between Ally's absolute distaste for celebrity and her jealousy of the doors that celebrity opened for Vanessa. And even though Vanessa is more or less the story's It Girl, her fondness for Ally's family, especially since her own parents left a lot to be desired, was a really nice, humanizing touch. I also loved the love story--because OMG, Liam!--and the many, subtle nods to the prevalence of racism in Hollywood, and how it impacts Ally's opinion of the movie/TV industry. Then again, I'm also a huge sucker for good, realistic Hollywood-centered YA, and BEHIND THE SCENES definitely delivered. Now, I'm excited to get my hands on the sequel!

I bought this book several months ago after it hit my radar for the first time, but I took forever to get around to reading it. It sounded great and I was interested, but it got lost in the stack of review books. Once I got an ARC for the second book in the series, Under the Lights, I knew I needed to finally dive into this one. While I'm kicking myself for taking this long to read it, I'm also kinda glad I waited so I could binge read the series. It's been a long time since I read a famous person/regular person book and I have to say, this one really hit the spot. I really liked both Ally and Liam. The supporting characters were interesting. Even with all the "teenager drama" and conflict, I enjoyed the story. It was believable and real, as were the characters. More than anything though, I loved Dahlia's writing. She has a fresh voice, even when writing a trope I've read a number of times. The romance between Ally and Liam was great. I loved how they just got each other. Of course, this made it a little difficult at times to watch as he paraded Ally's best friend Vanessa around as his (fake) girlfriend as a PR stunt. I was so much in Ally's head that I felt every emotion she felt. And believe me, between her father's illness and this relationship drama, she was feeling a lot. I was in this 1000% as they navigated the bumpy waters of having a real relationship in secret while letting the world think Liam was in a VERY public relationship with someone else. It was messy. It was dramatic in that way that young adult books can be. But it's all of that which made it realistic and engrossing. One thing I've learned with Dahlia's books is that you should expect the unexpected. You might think you know what direction a story point is heading, but more often than not, you'll be completely wrong. This is just one of many reasons I love her books. It would've been so easy for her to turn Ally and Vanessa's friendship into frenemies or to draw out her dad's storyline. Instead, she made it her own and I loved what it was.

This is my first book by Dahlia Adler, but I'm positive it won't be my last. Behind the Scenes was a great book. It was full of the things that I love about YA books. It was adorable, funny, a little dramatic, swoon worthy, and perfectly teenager-y. All those things with an interesting plot and well developed characters? Yeah, I know! Books like this are rare. If you're looking for a really good YA book, look no further. This is one you need to pick up. And, it gets better. This is the first in a series (and I'm lucky enough to have been approved for the second book on Netgalley)! Under the Lights is set to be published on June 30, 2015. Until then, pick up Behind the Scenes! You can read all of my reviews on my blog, KDH Reviews.

I totally fell in love with this book-- and with the real and honest characters. The writing was so clever and fresh, too. CAN NOT WAIT for the next book in this series. Josh and Vanessa and a f/f romance? SIGN ME UP.

I saw an interview with a celebrity, who was asked how often he hung out with another celeb. He was quick to set the reporter straight – never. He told her, just because they’re famous, doesn’t mean all their friends are too. Huh. Who would’ve thought? (And where did I sign up?) BEHIND THE SCENES looks at this more human side of Hollywood. It reminds us that as much as we love to see a picture of a star with no makeup, they’re actually people too. The best part - it’s NOT told from the perspective of Van, the celebrity, but her ‘nobody’ best friend, Ally. Being in Ally’s head was a great, hilarious ride. She had a crazy way of overthinking everything – sometimes out loud – and would regularly space out mid-conversation (I don’t know what that’s like AT ALL). I loved the girl, and even though she may have made mistakes, I never doubted her decisions, because it was always done with a good heart. The friendship between Ally and Van had a warm, genuine feel to it. I really believed these two girls supported each other 100%, despite their different lifestyles. It was refreshing to read a friendship that seemed destined to stand up through life’s inevitable changes, especially given the extra pressure of Van’s career. The relationship between Liam and Ally was swoony and hot, but also had a realistic feel to it. There were no declarations of love two chapters in, just two YA’s dating and getting to know each other, despite their restrictions. I think that’s one of the reasons I enjoyed BEHIND THE SCENES so much – it felt believable and real, with a depth that got you thinking, but never felt too heavy. Adler also has a talent for writing strong, supporting characters. Each one had a unique voice and I would’ve happily jumped into any of their heads for another story. I loved Ally’s interaction with her family, especially her little sister and was left swooning over Josh Chester – who doesn’t love a Hollywood bad boy with a hidden heart? BEHIND THE SCENES was an impressive debut for Adler and I’ll definitely be keeping this author on my radar.

This book has everything: Hollywood, teen TV dramas, prom, and deeper family issues. In Behind the Scenes, Ally's childhood best friend Vanessa is in the Hollywood spotlight, having just been recruited as the lead for a hot new teen soap (think The Vampire Diaries or The O.C. ). Ally, a top student, may need to sacrifice her Ivy League college dreams after her dad's melanoma diagnosis turns fatal. She picks up a job as her friend's personal assistant where she meets and falls for Vanessa's costar, Liam. The balance of Hollywood vs. real life felt so realistic here. Seeing, literally, behind the scenes of a TV production with the publicists and paparazzi and the press who skews the truth, makes that whole side of life seem far less glamorous. Ally is a great character because she's loyal to Vanessa, not a TV show. Liam has a great backstory, and his relationship with Ally, with his costars, and his own family are explored and played off of Ally's experience. Lots of conflict that felt realistic despite being set among celebrities and the TV/movie scene. I recommend this for fans of writers like Sarah Dessen and Morgan Matson. A great summer read with that touch of depth from the family issues to provide a really engaging read.

This book was adorable! I had so many other books I was planning on reading first, but I glanced at the first page just to see what it was like, and after that I just couldn't stop reading it. The characters in this book are great. I found myself relating to Ally a lot. She tries so hard to be okay with everything that's happening, and her struggles are very realistic. She doesn't always make the best choices, and some of the things that surprised her are kind of like, "Really? How did you not see that?" - but she has enough going on in her life that you can't really blame her for being a bit oblivious. Unlike many other books I've read, we actually get to see why the love interests would be interested in each other. They're down to earth characters who joke around with each other. They don't always make the best choices, and Ally's insecurity might be a problem for some readers, but I really enjoyed reading about these two. I also liked the supporting characters. Vanessa's beautiful and talented and successful, but she still does whatever she can to help her best friend. Josh isn't in it for very long, but I found myself really starting to like him, so I'm super excited about reading the companion novel that focuses more on him. I have only two complaints about this novel: 1) The fake relationship. It worked for a while, and maybe I just don't get how Hollywood works (probably don't), but it didn't seem realistic. 2) The very ending. Let's just say she makes a choice that I don't agree with, and I don't think others' reactions were really all that believable. Overall, this was a great book. There were parts that annoyed me (particularly during the last 30 pages), and there were some formatting issues (which I'm 99% sure weren't my Nook's fault), but I still had to force myself to stop reading so I could go do other things. I meant to read one chapter last night and ended up staying up until 4 in the morning so I could finish it. Part of me feels like I should rate this lower based on my problems with it, but the rest of me enjoyed it way too much to do that. I really enjoyed this book, and I look forward to reading everything else Dahlia Adler writes in the future!

What an absolute treat this book was to read! Full of clever dialogue, layered characters, and seriously hot moments, it was the perfect escape from my humdrum day. I pretty much inhaled it, and I can only imagine that plenty of teens (and not-so-teens) will do the same. Can't wait for more smart and sexy books from Dahlia Adler. :)

You know how some books make you swoon and cry and yell at the characters and at the end you have this goofy smile on your face and just want to hug the book and never let go? That’s this book.  BEHIND THE SCENES is at the same time the incredibly swoony and delicious love story every girl wished she could experience/could have experienced as a teenager—falling for the gorgeous famous guy everyone has pictures of in their lockers and having him fall for you even harder—and the story of a girl’s growing into herself and dealing with difficult stuff at home and just trying to come out of it in one piece.  What else do I love about this book?  -The friendship between Ally and Van—I love seeing real friends in books. Not frenemies, not rivals—best friends who would do anything for each other.  -The behind the scenes ;) sneak peek into the world of young Hollywood, for better and for worse—fascinating and SO fun. -The humor—I was laughing so hard at parts of this book. The characters are so witty and compelling and three-dimensional that I loved reading about even the ones I was supposed to dislike.  -Liam. Enough said, right? (Seriously though, if you are looking for a hot guy who’s also nice but a little bit troubled and it just makes him even hotter—here you go.)  And if nothing else, read for Liam’s abs. Totally worth it.
