This was such a beautiful yet turbulent love story. One fateful night changes two lives forever. Avery enters the ocean excited to catch the next wave. Kai enters the ocean to rescue a drowning girl. She survives. he doesn’t. Now Avery is stuck. She can’t move past her guilt. I felt so sad for Avery. She’s consumed with survivor’s guilt. Her friends feel she should be over it. Her boyfriend is all out of understanding. If only she could see the boys face. And Kai. Yes, he’s dead. He now has another purpose beyond life. But rules won’t let him help Avery. If only he could tell her that it’s okay. That he’s okay. These two character’s seemed destined to be together. I thought long and hard about how the author could make that happen. Then I continued listening to the story to find out. As I listened, I forgot about focusing on the ending as I was swept away by the adversities these two had to face. I enjoyed this as an audible. Dana Dae as Avery and Zachary Webber as Kai each tell their character’s point of view in the story, doing a nice job of developing their personalities. As the story deepens they also do a great job of expressing emotions without it feeling forced. I’m glad I chose this format to enjoy the book. It was a pleasant surprise that I was so moved by this story. I really connected with Avery and Kai and hoped they would have a happy ever after. Whether you choose to read this book or listen to it, I’m sure you’ll be swept away like I was.

Beyond The Rising Tide, is one of those books, that you know will make a big impact on anyone that reads it. After a tragic accident Avery hasn’t been herself. Blaming herself for death of boy who saved her life. She doesn’t know his name, she can’t remember his face and spends months trying to find anything that could tell her who this boy once was. Avery doesn’t realize that the boy who saved her life, has been watching her. Has wanted to help her, to make sure she is going to have the life she should have. After a huge decision, that involves theft. Kai, the boy who saved her life, want’s to save her again. But how will he do it? This really was a beautifully written story. About loss, and how to overcome those obstacles and move on with your life. I really loved Kai, he had a good heart. He didn’t want Avery to blame herself, for something that she couldn’t control. I didn’t like Avery’s “boyfriend” since she wasn’t the same person as she was before. It was like he didn’t want anything to do with her. He was pretty much a total douche canoe. The story did take a turn, that I didn’t expect. I did enjoy this story. Avery and Kai are two strong souls, that found love in each other. They were willing to fight for each other. And not ever let go. Overall, I give this book four stars. It was exciting, unique, and really had me on edge. I had to finish....Lissa

4.5 Stars Wow, this story pulled me in right from the beginning! I knew I shouldn't have started reading it so late at night. If I hadn't had to work the next morning I would have read it straight through. As it was I read it during my morning treadmill workout and finished reading as soon as I got home from work. I was really curious about how things would work out. I wanted Kai and Avery to be together but I just didn't see how it could work given that he was dead. It was a very creative story with touching moments (yes, tears were shed). I have read both of Sarah Beard's published books, and they are full of emotion. You can't help but become invested in the story and the characters. She is such a talented author, and I hope she continues writing. Beyond the Rising Tide is a clean, fast read. If you love books that are very engaging, and books that have a roller coaster of emotions, do not miss this.

Wow. Just, wow. Beyond the Rising Tide has everything I love in a YA novel- strong emotions, vulnerable characters, and a creative setting. The paranormal aspects of Kai's existence outside of mortality are fascinating and well-depicted. They don't dominate the story but provide support for an imaginative plot. Avery's grief and depression are easy to relate to, and her struggles are compounded by a thoughtless ex-boyfriend and bipolar mother. I appreciated the levels of complexity in the dynamics of Avery's relationships with her family. As more was revealed I was drawn deeper into the story and really felt for everyone involved. Kai's determination to help Avery, even without much of a game plan, made me admire his faith that he can make a difference. Even though the timeline of their relationship is brief, the development of their friendship and focus on being there for each other gives their stronger feelings a foundation of trust and support. While Avery's healing process is beautiful, it was the moments where Kai's recognition of his new feelings of peace and being loved pierced his heart that I was brought to tears. There is an overall sense of desperation as there doesn't seem to be any way for them to be together, but of course I always hold out hope for a happy ending ;) I loved this amazing journey and highly recommend it! (Thank you to the author and Cedar Fort Publishing for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review)
