CHAPTER 1

Dolphins

• ¼ sheet clear 7-count plastic canvas
• Needloft plastic canvas yarn as listed in color key
• DMC #5 pearl cotton as listed in color key
• #16 tapestry needle
• Adhesive-backed magnet strip

Cutting & Stitching

1. Cut one dolphins motif from plastic canvas according to graph.

2. Work Continental Stitches and Overcast edges according to graph.

3. When background stitches are complete, add embroidery stitches, referring to General Instructions on page 1. Using black and silver yarns, Straight Stitch mouths and fins.

4. Using black #5 pearl cotton, work Backstitches and Straight Stitches according to graph. Work French Knot eyes, wrapping pearl cotton around needle three times.

5. Using 1 ply separated from a strand of white yarn throughout, refer to step 4 of General Instructions to work eye highlights through French Knots; Backstitch and Straight Stitch highlights on water using 1 ply white yarn.

6. Adhere magnet strip to back of stitched plastic canvas.

CHAPTER 2

Lobster

• DMC #5 pearl cotton as listed in color key

• Thick white craft glue
• Adhesive-backed magnet strip

Cutting & Stitching

1. Cut one lobster from plastic canvas according to graph.

2. Work Continental Stitches and Overcast edges according to graph. Note: When working black yarn stitches for each eye, work one stitch for the upper stitch, and work over stitch twice for the lower stitch.

3. When background stitches are complete, Straight Stitch legs using beige yarn. Using 1 ply separated from a strand of white yarn, Backstitch highlights on tail, and work highlights on eyes, splitting black stitches as you take needle back down.

4. For antennae, draw a strand of black #5 pearl cotton through plastic canvas from front to back at one antenna placement point. Leaving a 3-inch tail on front, secure pearl cotton with a Backstitch on back, then draw through other antenna placement point from back to front. Using your fingertips, stiffen both antennae by working dabs of glue into them. Shape antennae so that they curve to the outside; let dry. Trim ends even. If desired, secure completed antennae to plastic canvas with tiny dabs of glue.

5. Adhere magnet strip to back of stitched plastic canvas.

CHAPTER 3

Orca

3. When background stitches are complete, add embroidery stitches, referring to General Instructions on page 1. Using black #5 pearl cotton, Backstitch and Straight Stitch mouth and tail; work French Knot for eye, wrapping pearl cotton around needle three times.

Cutting & Stitching

1. Cut plastic canvas according to graph. Note: If you plan to back with felt, trace shape, except tusk, on felt before stitching.

2. Stitch piece following graph, working uncoded areas with silver Continental Stitches except for black Cross Stitch.

3. With 2 plies of yarn, work black Cross Stitch and nickel Backstitches for ears and leg creases last.

4. Overcast white tusk and all remaining edges as indicated on graph.

5. For 2-inch tail, cut a 10-inch length of 6 plies nickel. Thread through hole indicated and fold in half. Braid for about 1 inch; knot and trim to size, leaving yarn ends as shown in photo.

6. If using felt, trim slightly smaller and apply. Attach strip of magnetic tape to back.

CHAPTER 10

2. Stitch piece following graph, overcasting edges while stitching. Do not Overcast tail edges. Overcast beak and feet in orange.

3. Cut three 8-inch lengths of white yarn, four of tan and three of silver. Separate each into 2 plies.

4. For tail fringe, fold each 2-ply length in half, insert loop through hole and slip ends through loop. Note: Place colors randomly. Trim fringe as shown in photo.

5. If using felt, trim slightly smaller and apply. Attach strip of magnetic tape behind both tail and body.

CHAPTER 11

Moo - LindaCow

• #16 tapestry needle
• 2 (3mm) pearl beads
• 16mm cow bell (optional)
• Sewing needle and black thread
• 8 inches (1/8-inch) red satin ribbon
• Magnetic tape
• Self-adhesive felt (optional)

Cutting & Stitching

1. Cut plastic canvas according to graphs. Note: If you plan to back with felt, trace body on felt before stitching.

2. Work pieces following graphs, overcasting the outer edges as you stitch each color section.

3. With 1 ply black, Backstitch leg details and add French Knot nostrils. Sew pearl bead eyes as indicated.

4. Place head on body with eyes even with neck edge of back. Rotate head slightly to the right and join with 1 ply of white yarn with the three stitches indicated in center of face.

5. For tail, separate 8 inches white yarn into 4 plies. Thread 3 plies into hole shown. Fold yarn in half, making 6 plies and braid about 1 inch. Knot and trim ends.

6. If desired, hang cow bell on ribbon. Tie ribbon in bow around head and trim.

7. If using felt, trim slightly smaller and apply. Attach strip of magnetic tape to back.

Note: Head will rotate slightly to express Moo-Linda's personality.

CHAPTER 12

Viceroy Butterfly

• DMC #3 pearl cotton as listed in color key

• Thick white craft glue
• Adhesive-backed magnet strip

Cutting & Stitching

1. Cut plastic canvas according to graph.

2. Stitch and Overcast as shown.

3. Using 1 strand black #5 pearl cotton, work Straight Stitches over brown Continental Stitches at bottom of body. Using 1 strand or 2 strands black #5 pearl cotton as indicated, work black Backstitches and Straight Stitches on wings.

4. Using 1 strand or 2 strands white #3 pearl cotton as indicated, work white Backstitches at tops of wings. Using 1 strand white #3 pearl cotton, work Pin Stitches around edges of wings: Bring pearl cotton up in hole indicated; go down through adjacent black stitch, splitting stitch, then back through same hole in which stitch originated.

5. Using black yarn, Straight Stitch body, working longest, center stitch last. Using 1 strand black #5 pearl cotton, work horizontal Straight Stitches across body as indicated.

6. Antennae: Draw 1 strand black #5 pearl cotton through Overcast edge at top of head, leaving tail; secure with a Backstitch on back of butterfly and draw pearl cotton out again, leaving a second tail. Stiffen antennae by drawing them through fingertips moistened with a dab of glue. Let dry; trim antennae to 1–11/8 inches.

7. Affix magnet to back.

Red-spotted Purple Butterfly

Cutting & Stitching

1. Cut plastic canvas according to graph.

2. Stitch and Overcast as shown.

3. Using 1 strand black #5 pearl cotton, work Straight Stitches over purple Continental Stitches adjacent to body and on wings. Using 1 strand or 2 strands black #5 pearl cotton as indicated, work black Backstitches and Straight Stitches on wings.

4. Using pumpkin and bright blue yarn and 1 strand white #3 pearl cotton as indicated, work Backstitches near edges of wings. Using black yarn, Backstitch head and Straight Stitch body, working longest, center stitch last. Using 1 strand black #5 pearl cotton, work Straight Stitches across body as indicated.

5. Antennae: Draw 1 strand black #5 pearl cotton through Overcast edge at top of head, leaving tail; secure with a Backstitch on back of butterfly and draw pearl cotton out again, leaving a second tail. • ½ sheet 7-count plastic canvas
• Needloft plastic canvas yarn as listed in color key
• DMC #5 pearl cotton as listed in color key
• #16 tapestry needle
• Powdered cosmetic blush
• Cotton-tip swab
• 3 button magnets
• Thick white glue

Cutting & Stitching

1. Cut plastic canvas according to graphs.

2. Stitch birdies and Overcast according to graphs.

3. Using full strands of yarn, work yellow Straight Stitches on beaks, cinnamon Straight Stitches on nest, forest Straight Stitches on leaf, and black Straight Stitches on Flying and Singing birdies' eyes.

4. Using 1 ply separated from a strand of white yarn, work Pin Stitch eye highlights on Singing Birdie: Bring yarn up in hole indicated; go down through adjacent black stitch, splitting stitch.

5. Work remaining Backstitches and Straight Stitches using black #5 pearl cotton, passing over eyes of Nesting Birdie twice.

6. Topknots: Referring to diagram for Head Knot, form knot at placement point on each birdie using bright blue yarn. Trim yarn ends to ½ inch (1.3cm); fluff ends with needle.

7. Apply cosmetic blusher to birdies' cheeks using cotton-tip swab. Glue magnet to back of each birdie.

CHAPTER 15

Quilt Blocks

• Worsted weight yarn as listed in color key
• 6-strand cotton embroidery floss as listed in color key

1. Cut design blocks and block backings from clear plastic canvas according to graphs.

2. Stitch blocks and block backings according to graphs, leaving centers of block backings unstitched and filling in uncoded areas on design blocks with black Continental Stitches.

3. Overcast edges of design blocks with black yarn. Overcast edges of house block backing with dark aqua, churn block backing with orchid, and star block backing with lime green.

4. Straight Stitch design blocks with black floss and lime green yarn according to graphs.

5. Center and hot-glue each design block to its block backing.

3. When background stitching is complete, work embroidery stitches:

Strawberry — Straight Stitch mouth and nose with white; Straight Stitch seeds with bright green; Backstitch eyes with black.
