The second edition of this book does not disappoint. The author succeeds in his goal to provide practicing physicians with concise, comparative, basic as well as clinical information about this new class of drugs. The book rapidly progresses from a quick primer on bone physiology through chemical, physiological, and pharmacokinetic information about bisphosphonates to its major focus on the clinical use of these compounds in Paget's disease, tumor bone disease, hypercalcemia, osteoporosis, and heterotopic ossification. Practitioners and specialists who deal in metabolic bone disease will enjoy the new information and insights about bisphosphonates, an area of major expertise from this most creditable author. I found the use of tables, pictures, figures, and illustrations to be about right. The author's use of a format that added highlighted summary statements and redirected me to previous statements pleased me. It aided my retention. Some may not enjoy this format. The book should be an important purchase for prescribing physician groups, researchers who seek an overview, as well as biomedical libraries. I think this book should help these readers expand and firm their knowledge about bisphosphonates. It will also provide them with a framework to hold new information about this expanding class of useful compounds.
