Overview

An Amazon Charts, #1 Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling series.

She’s investigating a cold case no one else could—by going places no else would dare.

In spite of a harrowing past still haunting her, Gwen Proctor is trying to move forward. Until a new assignment gives her purpose: the cold-case disappearance of a young man in Tennessee. Three years missing, no clues. Just Ruth Landry, a tortured mother in limbo. Gwen understands what it’s like to worry about your children.

Gwen’s investigation unearths new suspects…and victims. As she follows each sinister lead, the implications of the mystery grow more disturbing. Because the closer Gwen gets, the closer she is to a threat that looms back home.

In a town that’s closed its ranks against Gwen; her partner, Sam; and her kids, there’s no bolder enemy than the Belldene family—paramilitary, criminal, powerful, and vengeful. As personal vendettas collide with Gwen’s investigation, she’s prepared to fight both battles. But is she prepared for the toll it could take on everyone she loves?

‏I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review. Bitter Falls is the fourth book in Rachel Caine's Stillhouse Lake series. To give a fair review, I read the earlier books and I am so glad I did. I will publish reviews on those, but this one will concern only Bitter Falls. Gwen Proctor, working as a P.I., is tasked with investigating a cold case missing person. As usual with Gwen, things with this case, are not as simple as they seem. The entire family is pulled into the case while trying to stay away from the Hillbilly Mafia who wants Gwen and her family gone. Of course, you can not forget about the internet trolls and the Lost Angels. As with the other books in the series, this book was difficult to put down. The story is fast-paced and, after Wolfhunter, the family is not able to pretend to "be normal" for long. By making Gwen a P.I, Rachel Caine has ensured this series will be able to continue with new and different cases in each book. I know I look forward to the next adventure of Gwen, the kids, Sam, and their friends/supporters. Heartbreak Bay, the 5th book in Stillhouse Lake series is available to pre-order. This 200-word review was published on Philomathinphila.com on 2/9/20.

Rachel Caine once again does not disappoint!! I truly thought this series was over with book 3. I didn’t really see it going anywhere else seeing how her husband was killed and all three books revolved around that conflict. So when I saw a fourth book I was thrilled! I did wonder if I would like a fourth book because again I wasn’t sure where it could go. But this book did not disappoint. Gwen is hired as an a private investigator to track down this couples son. Little did she know the company tracking down the young man had an ulterior motive. And what she believes will be a relatively simple investigation is quite the opposite. It once again brings her, Sam and her children into the world of danger. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat. You don’t want to put it down you will finish this in one sitting.

*Note: This series must be read in order. If you haven't read the first book yet, go, right now, and pick up Stillhouse Lake. You're welcome. After the third book in the Stillhouse Lake series, which I enjoyed, I wondered if Caine would be able to continue the drama and danger that made the books so captivating now that the protagonist of the series was dead. Within the first sentence, it is clear that while Gwen no longer battles Melvin Royal, she will cross paths with another who is equally evil. As in previous books, the Proctor family is flawed. Despite the trauma they have endured over recent years, they remain loyal to each and guided by a strong moral compass. One of the reasons I enjoy this series is due to Caine's ability to pull you into the story in such a way that you feel as if you are actually the character, rather than an observer. I finished this book just like I ended the others, satisfied that evil was at rest for moment, and anxious for the next part in story. (Write fast Rachel!) I received an eARC from the publisher via Netgalley. This is my honest review.

Rachel Caine is writing a series with characters that I love to read about. We have Gwen Proctor, a tough-as-nails mom and PI who is trying to navigate a world where trolls are still out to hurt her family because of the horrible crimes of her ex-husband. Her kids are tough too, but believable as kids, and they keep finding trouble. Sam is the love interest and it is all really complicated! This one has a carryover storyline from the last book (creepy Wolfhunter River) and I think that was a great story arc. Gwen’s work as a private investigator is a good fit for her, but it does seem to drag her into trouble and danger! This time, it’s a cold case of a missing college student. As Gwen digs deeper, things are falling apart for the family in Stillhouse Lake. Gwen has tried to keep a permanent place for her family there and settle down, but the town seems to be constantly at war with them and they really don’t feel wanted anymore. The whole family gets drawn into Gwen’s investigation as they grapple with leaving Stillhouse Lake. This book kept me on my toes with some surprises and super chilling cult happenings. I will continue to drop everything to read the next installment in this series. I hope Rachel Caine has a dozen more stories up her sleeves for the Proctor family! If you are looking for a new thriller series to start in 2020 and you haven’t read the “Stillhouse Lake” series – I highly recommend it! I do recommend starting with #1, this is a series that works best if you know the whole story! If you already love this series, this new one does not disappoint, and I was thrilled to make it my last read of 2019.

Gwen Proctor is finding her way in her new life after killing her ex-husband, a serial killer, in self-defense. Now she hopes that she, her two children and her partner Sam Cade can move on. She is working as a private investigator and has been hired to locate a missing college student who after a night out with friends was never seen again. After three years, the case has gone cold, but the young man’s mother still hopes. Gwen also has some major decisions to make. Her family is still not accepted in Stillhouse Lake, due to her ex-husband, and they receive constant threats. Should they move to another area where they might be able to live in peace? Gwen is a strong woman trying to protect her family, but this recent case may end up causing them more trouble. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

This is the 4th book in this series and this family just doesn't seem to get a break st all. Gwen Proctor is one tough woman. She had to be her husband was a serial killer. If you’ve ever seen the TV show The Following it’s similar. He had crazy people doing his bidding. The place they thought was there safe haven has turned against them so they are ready to move somewhere new. This time she’s up against a cult full of religious fanatics. She’s investigating a missing person. This book is suspenseful and fast paced. On to the next.

This is the 4th book in this series and just as great as the others! A thriller that kept me on the edge until the end waiting to see what would happen. In this one the town goes against her family as she is trying to solve the disappearance of a boy. Between the case and the threats against her family this is a can't put down book.
