Leafing through Bobbi Brown's Makeup Manual is almost like sitting down and having a cup of latte with the makeup whiz herself. Her book answers every question I'd ask, and subjects are arranged in an easy to locate format along with step-by-step instructions so the reader can take as much or as little time as she wishes. Dramatic for a special evening? Understated for the office? Picture perfect for a photography session? The choice is ours. While some tend to make applying cosmetics a difficult task one of the reasons I like Bobbi Brown so much is that she makes it easy.

Never one to overlook the necessity of good health via nutrition, exercise, and sleep Bobbi begins with some practical reminders along those lines. Then, it's on to skin care basics. I thought I knew all I needed to to know about cleansing, moisturizing, etc. Wrong! Bobbi said that dry lips are a sign that one should drink more water, and she's right - it worked for me. Also, she suggested applying moisturizer by "gently pressing the product into the skin until it is completely absorbed." Also works for me!

There are tons of these tips that really do make a difference - all the way from choosing the right foundation shade (swatch a few shades on your face, check the colors in natural light - the one that disappears is for you) to shaping eyebrows to applying lip gloss that stays, yes, glossy.

The photographs are gorgeous and especially useful when the reader is shown the application of blush or eye shadow from start to finish. If you're a budding makeup artist Bobbi shares a wealth of information and advice.

Also included are makeup tips for teens, brides, and special occasions. There's something helpful for everyone in Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual!

I found this book to be very informative and yet easy to understand. The explanation for tools, their uses, and why they are needed was very useful. I plan on referring to this book as I do the bridal make-up for my sisters wedding. The other thing that really stood out to me was how this book isn't an ad for a specific company. While Ms. Brown does highlight some companies that she works with she never makes you feel like that is the only company to use/work with. Her non bias approach is very refreshing in an ad consuming world.

Bobbi Brown is not one of my favorite makeup artist, but she hits it dead on with this book, I like the fact that she offers tips for people who are just starting out with makeup, but also for people who want to go pro.

This book is fabulous for those new to makeup application or those who need a refresher course. Good pictures with detail, including makeup tools, makeup application, special effects. She also includes basic skin care tips that were helpful. My only complaint is that it was obviously geared towards if you use the Bobbi Brown (makeup) line, and had no mention of using mineral (foundation) makeup. Still effective and informative information.

This is one of those yummy books with glossy color pages that smell good! Everything you need to know about makeup is included in this volume from equipment to the "Ten-Step Guide to Perfect Makeup." Tips for advanced makeup care for fashion shows, television, and photography have a chapter all to themselves. The history of makeup in chronological order and "Who's Who in Makeup" are two delightful surprises at the end.

Makeup manuals are an odd thing to acquire as a 'reference' book. At least it's a novel idea for me. Bobbi Brown clearly knows her way around a makeup palette...She has organized info well, provided good illustrations and generally presents a wealth of info about makeup. While it didn't make me head straight to the looking glass to try out new things, it will come in handy when I need to update a look for evening, or modify makeup for work, etc.

I'm an up and coming makeup artist and this book is so helpful to be. I have sticky notes all through it. I practice what I learn and I'm just really excited to have found this book!

If you are in search of basic skincare and makeup basics sprinkled with industry information, then this is the book for you. I have some knowledge of makeup and do rather well with my makeup, so I hoped this book would offer some intermediate and never-before-seen techniques and tips. The book is good with providing BASIC step-by-step directions for makeup application accompanied by easy-to-follow photographs. Also, the second half of the book provides information to those interested in learning about the industry and what makeup stylists actually do. If you're starting a career in this field or are looking for good, BASIC information from an expert in the field, then you will not be disappointed with this book. However, if you are an intermediate to advanced makeup user, then I recommend searching for tips and trade secrets from other sources. Suffice it to say that I will not be keeping my book; I will donate it to a local woman's shelter so it can help someone else blossom.

the book was very informative, but it isn't for first time cosmetic users. for someone like myself, however, who has been using makeup for about a year, found it very easy. one of my friends is a professional, and she found the book very well written too. she even found some tips in it.

This book was so helpful!! I am a freelance makeup artist and the book teaches every little and big thing that you need to know! it even tells you what should be in your kit and talks about starting your makeup business as well. By far, this is my favorite makeup book! I would recommend to everyone!

I love that Brown takes much of the mystery out of her brand of makeup application. Brown examines makeup application for a variety of angles and ethnic groups. The needs of all ages are addressed. This is a great makeup tutorial with plenty of colorful pics. I'd recommend this book to anyone wanting more professional makeup application.

I really didn't think this book was very good for the average consumer. I also have Makeup Makeovers by Robert Jones and I learned exponentially more from it.One of my biggest problems was the 1/3 of the book that was geared entirely to makeup artists. I could really care less how to put makeup on a movie star. All in all I wish I had my 20 bucks back because after reading it cover to cover (I may have skimmed a bit during that last 1/3) I don't imagine that I'll ever feel the need to open it again. There are much better books on makeup out there.

Just received this book in the mail from the Early Reviewers group today and I love it! It has lots of good information that I'm sure I'll be experimenting with all the time and the color photos are gorgeous. Definitely recommend this to anybody who has or wants to have an interest in makeup. It's perfect for all ages, with sections devoted to makeup for teens, ageless looks and everything in between.

Perfect for : Personal Use, Great gift for a girl getting into makeup (promotes positive self image), Professionals in beauty/makeup fieldIn a nutshell: I was amazed at the amount of information and detail contained in this book! I was never really taught about makeup, so this has provided me with a lot of practical and technical information that I wasn't previously aware of. From basic beauty equipment and the basics of skin care to the business of makeup and professional artistry, this book has it all! The photographs are beautiful and help to show what the author is talking about, and the explanations are easy to understand. This is a beautiful book that would be great for someone wanting to learn more about makeup for themselves, or as a profession. It would also be a great book to have on-hand at a salon or spa.Extended Review:The information contained in the book covers just about everything I could ever think of pertaining to skin-care and makeup and then some. The colorful photographs serve to enhance the book by providing brilliant examples of what the author is talking about as well as how-to's with people actually showing how to apply what the author is explaining.Content: The book progresses nicely through the following chapters: Makeup Artistry, Equipment, Skin, Face, Lips, Eyes, Ten-Step Guide to Perfect Makeup, Special Makeup Applications, Artistry, Essential Equipment for the Professional, Advanced Makeup Applications, Memorable Makeup Moments and Legends. It also contains a very helpful resource guide that provides Theatrical Makeup Stores, Makeup Artist Agencies, Creative Directories and Suggested Reading. As you can see, there is plenty of information designed both for the end-user (like me) as well as professionals!Format: The chapters progress through the makeup application very nicely, with plenty of wonderful full-color photographs depicting both finished looks, and the steps to accomplish those finished looks (as well as products and colors).Readability: Amazingly enough, with so much technical information throughout the book, it was written in a manner that was easy to read - even the harder artistry pages were easy to understand, if not easy to create for the novice!Overall: A very complete book that is sure to teach everyone from the novice to the professional something about makeup in a way that is easy to understand and duplicate (hopefully! - I haven't tried ALL the examples).

I was excepting a very helpful guide to using make up but it felt like it was two books in one a beginner's book and an expert. This made the book mcuh harder to use in real life. It should have been two books instead of one so it could focus on each of the topics.

I've read 2 other of Brown's books, and while I always pick up a great tip or 2 they usually let me down- especially when compared to the brilliant Kevyn Aucoin books. Aucoin believed (and I agree) that their are no rules in makeup- just common sense. Brown, on the other hand, seems to ADORE rules and rarely experiments- and when she does, it's nothing noteworthy. I also disagree with her 10 step basic face section- I think foundation should go on before concealer, that way you can really see the places you need it and save some time. Also, doing your lips before your eyes? I guess if you enjoy smearing your lipstick all over your face, ok. The book is beautiful and there's some good stuff in it, but it's just not worth the high price. You can find everything she "teaches" online or in magazines.

I am not much of a make-up person but I got the book as part of the early reviewer program on LT. I felt the book was very informative on things including skin care, types, makeup, brushes, etc... The photography was great and it was written in an easy to understand format. I would recommend any girl should read if she puts on makeup for any occasion.

My Star Rating: 5 stars out of 5 = I Love It.Summary Statement:Clear and Concise, Great Advice and InformationThe subtitle of BOBBI BROWN MAKEUP MANUAL indicates it is for the beginner to pro and I¿m in the beginner category. All I¿m interested in is doing my own makeup well. As a user of Bobbi Brown makeup for over ten years, I wanted to read this book to see what I could improve as formerly I was just applying the makeup as instructed by the BB counter saleswoman instructed me. I didn¿t know why I was doing what I was doing until I read this book. The bulk of the book (the first 138 pages) is designed to be used by both individual women for their own makeup and can also be used by professionals. After giving some brief opinions and recommendations on which products or product types to use on various skin types or for different purposes (such as when to use crème blush versus powder blush for example), clear directions for applying the makeup properly are given in brief text along with full step by step directions. Important to note is that all skin colors and different ethnicities are included. Special techniques for Asians are given such as handling eye makeup. I was happily surprised to see special advice given for women with freckles, the advice is to not cover them up completely but to use special makeup effects that allow them to show through. Also covered is how to handle makeup with skin conditions such as rosacea and others.A section at the beginning gives information about brush selection, the importance of proper brush maintenance, and the reasons to use high quality brushes. Advice on compiling makeup kits is included, specifically, what items to buy and how to organize them for different purposes (travel, everyday use, and so forth).I was impressed also with the section about eyebrows and eyelashes. Included is information about the benefits of and best ways to shape the eyebrows and when eyebrow makeup should be used. Directions for penciling in eyebrows for women with sparse eyebrows or who are currently undergoing chemotherapy is useful too. The proper way to apply mascara, how to use an eyelash curler and even how to apply false eyelashes correctly is included. What struck me the most about this book is that it gives just enough information to be thorough but not too much so as to bog down or intimidate the reader. The photographed stepped out directions are done well. It is easy to find the makeup technique or effect you want to achieve to use the book¿s directions when needed. When to use various effects is explained, such as daytime makeup and then touching it up for evening. Makeup for weddings and other formal events is also covered. The last 80 pages are dedicated to professional makeup artists or those striving to become professional makeup artists. Those pages cover a range of topics from special makeup procedures to use on models in dramatic photo shoots to job basics such as career options, marketing oneself and booking work.A short resources section is included at the end.I read the book cover to cover and learned some things about makeup and makeup application that I never knew. I finally know how to pick the right shade of lipstick and foundation, and how to bring up the various levels of makeup for a more dramatic effect if desired. Now I will use the book as a reference guide for applying makeup. The book can easily be referenced for step by step directions.Again from the perspective of an amateur, I loved this book. It breaks down a lot of information into easy to understand manner. I like the makeup style used by Bobbi Brown, of how natural her everyday makeup look is and the fact that Brown seeks to enhance a woman¿s unique features rather than putting the makeup first and the women second. Unlike other makeup companies, Brown does not just churn out trendy colors each season and expect women to buy and use them as they are `in style¿ at the moment. Brown wants women to look their best, to look

This was a really good guide on makeup application and techniques. It also contains a wealth of information for those who are interested in pursuing careers as makeup artists. The best part of the book (for me) was the 10-step basic guide to everyday makeup; I don't think I'm going to put a full face of makeup on everyday, but it's still really useful for those days when I feel like going to the trouble!
