In Pall’s paranormal thriller, a group of college students must face a great and terrible evil as part of a mission assigned to them in a past life.

Ten years ago, young April Martin and Tommy Jasermanran into each other shortly before Tommy’s parents were struck and killed by a van. They didn’t meet again until college, but now, April believes Tommy is a product of her imagination. She has a strange memory that, at some point before she was born, she and Tommy—along with two others, Bobby Mayo and Olivia—were given a mysterious mission by someone called the Captain. Although young April was told by a doctor that none of it was real, Tommy and Bobby eventually convince her otherwise. Tommy still grieves his parents, and he visits their killer, who tells him that his parents weren’t his target. Meanwhile, his family business is going through a difficult period, and his brother, Patrick, is relying on him to help. Around the same time, someone breaks into April’s dorm room, leaving a note behind, while nearby, a strange creature has been spotted in the ocean. Before long, readers learn that an icon of immorality and wickedness is trying to stop their mission, which involves making sure a pregnant woman doesn’t get an abortion; if they don’t, “life on earth will cease to exist.” Over the course of this novel, Pall lays out a supernatural story with plenty of intrigue and unpredictable plot twists. The complex worldbuilding that surrounds the main characters’ mission ably supports the main storyline, and April is a well-developed character overall. However, the plot, which foregrounds Christian elements and a world-saving anti-abortion mission, is likely to alienate many readers and will appeal mainly to a conservative religious audience.

An eventful debut, but one that’s likely to have a limited appeal.
