Overall, I liked Alex as our narrator; he's a likable and easy going guy who could work on his confidence a bit. He's devastated by the loss of his best friend, Eileen, who didn't make it out of cryosleep and the beginning of Abundance is set deep in Alex's grief over this death. I liked how real Emmalynn Spark wrote these early scenes because while they were hard to read they were also beautiful in a tragic way. Alex quickly learns to lean on the confident and strong Luke, who is sure that the other ships sent to New Earth landed just fine. Luke was less developed because we never see his point of view and we only see him through Alex's eyes. Luke becomes a rock for Alex in the early days and these two quickly bond over their shared tragedy. I never really felt like I got a good handle on Alex and Luke's relationship and how it evolved from sex to actual love. A large part of the book is focused on their time apart as Alex explores the planet and Luke works on fixing their communication array. While they take care of each other in small ways I was never fully convinced of their love by the end of the book. I went back and forth on what to rate Abundance because the beginning started out really strong but the second half of the book never quite worked for me. If you want a heavier feeling survival story focused more on the mental state of the characters, then you'd probably like this one.
