Pain. Do you know it? Is it an unwelcome companion in your life? Whether your pain is from cancer, an amputation, or a pain invisible to the world, Niki shares practical Biblical steps which will help you shift your focus off of your own pain and to what is possible when you walk with God right through the middle of it. "We are just ordinary folks who've taken some practices and, with God's help, are finding the rubies in the wreckage of our crazy, messed-up-right now lives, and you can too." This book won't cure you, but it might change you and others too.

The book beautifully captures how to thrive instead of simply survive when life throws you the unexpected. As a chemo patient, I could very much relate to both the struggles and triumphs mentioned throughout the book. One page I would be laughing and the next crying. The book is beautifully written–like having a conversation with a very close friend. From the relatable stories shared, to the beautiful prayers you can make your own, to the challenges that will push you to grow, this book is a must read for anyone who desires to thrive instead of just survive through whatever life throws their way. I plan to come back to it again and again. We can all use this message. It’s my hope that people read it before they need its truth.

If you have ever felt that life was falling apart, this book is for you to read. Your circumstances may be different than Niki’s, but the feelings that come with the falling apart just may be similar. The words of Niki Hardy come around you and provide comfort to you in the place of falling apart moments, letting you know that there is hope in God beyond where you are at now. I found her book helpful in encouraging women I work with, in their moments of grief and life situations. She encourages you that life doesn’t have to be pain-free to be full. That concept alone was worth my reading of her book. I would not hesitate to give this book to anyone who is struggling in a falling apart situation.

Niki is honest, heart-filling and humorous as she bolsters those in painful places to live their full lives in the midst of pain. Her words don’t make cheap promises for immediate happiness or healing in a few simple steps. Instead, she encourages us to swim within the riptide of our pain and allow it to carry us safely to a new place along life’s shores. Niki’s words bubble out of this book like she’s a good friend sharing her story over coffee (or tea in her case). I found myself both giggling aloud and wiping a stray tear through her storytelling. She enhances her advice to find community by sharing stories of other modern day thrivers and weaves in Biblical characters and truth. The action steps and prayers at the end of each chapter give us concrete ways to lean in and walk toward God’s promises of abundance. If we are not in the midst of one of life’s hardships, we have been, will be, and know someone who is. I recommend this book as a tool during our own grief and as a reminder how to love someone well who is going through hurt and hardship.

The greatest thing about this book is that Niki teaches us how to thrive rather than survive. I had always thought that if you survived the hard things, you were doing well, but she shows us how we don't have to just survive but we can actually live abundantly through Christ during the difficult things that life throws at us. This was not always an easy book for me to read as she went through having an ostomy, bag the same as I did and that was one of the absolute hardest things I've ever been through. It brought those hard times slamming into my head again and I had to really not get too caught up in those memories. However, having said this, her encouragement far outweighed any uncomfortable feelings I had reading about this. I really like how she gives us questions throughout the book for us to ponder and answer as we focus on thriving. She encourages us to grieve the hard things but also to embrace the lovely things that are also a part of our life even when things are hard. The fact that she opens her heart and truly shares her life and feelings makes this a book that's easy to read. You really feel like you're sitting down with your best friend over tea and having them share their heart with you. I found myself in tears and also laughing with joy while reading this book. It's real and straight from her heart. I can highly recommend this book and give it 5 stars. *This book was provided to me by Revell. I received a copy of this book to review but I was not financially compensated in any way. The opinions expressed are my own and are based on my observations while reading this book.

As someone who deals with significant mental health challenges, I love this book. The core message - that life doesn't have to be pain-free to be full, and that we can thrive in the hardest circumstances - resonates deeply with me. It's not a "just love Jesus and everything will be okay" type of message. Instead, it's an honest, clear-eyed, and sometimes funny look at how to turn those difficult situations into fuel for full lives. Niki's story of losing her mom and sister to cancer before being diagnosed with it herself is the backdrop for this guide to thriving when life falls apart. The thing is life's going to fall apart at some point for each of us. You want a wise, witty companion on that journey; that's what you'll find in this book. It's not just Niki's story, but the stories of others who have learned to live well in the midst of fear and heartache and uncertainty, as well as an exploration of what Scripture has to say about the hard times that hit us all. I received an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review, but I would recommend this book even if I didn't get an early copy. It's been super encouraging to me and made me chuckle a few times. If you need encouragement because you're stuck in circumstances you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy, you should grab Breathe Again.

I recovered from an eating disorder 10 years ago and read my fair share of self help and motivational books throughout my process. This is the book I wish I had a decade ago, and one I want to thrust into others’ hands going through similar battles. While an eating disorder might seem different than a cancer diagnosis, the questions that arise are the same. Why won’t God just heal me? Where is He in all of this? Does He even love me? Is He good? No matter what life circumstance has brought you to these questions, Niki brings beautiful and honest answers to your wrestling. With urgency and gentleness Niki implores us through storytelling and theologically sound insights to trust God. Not (just) for His sake, but for ours. With her wit and honesty Niki kindly convicted me of my self-reliance, and reminded me the only way to truly thrive is to surrender it all to Jesus, our rock and redeemer. This book is a must read for those who deeply desire to not just survive, but thrive.

"I am a thriver. I believe life doesn't have to be pain-free to be full." "Thriving sounds like surviving but with life-giving benefits added in free of charge." BREATHE AGAIN provides the truth we need when our world is rocked. When Ms. Hardy was diagnosed with cancer, her world shifted. I think we all know what that's like. Cancer. Divorce. Foreclosure. Job-loss. "I'm not good enough!" Ouch! But honestly now, we all believe it. God loves (fill in name) more than He loves me. I may be saved but instead of a mansion on a hilltop He'll give me a falling down shack on the back forty. To make it personal, I felt and sometimes still do feel that way. I am a cancer survivor, like Ms Hardy. But it left me imperfect. Scarred. Wounded. I'm a trial to my loved ones. They are happier if I stay home and don't go out because I'm handicapped..... To be honest BREATHE AGAIN arrived in my mailbox at a time I needed it. This is not a book to read and forget, this is a book to study with a Bible, a notebook, and tissues when it hits close to home. Alone or with a trusted friend. When life hits, BREATHE AGAIN and thrive. Recommended. I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.

It’s not easy to talk about facing cancer or grief. In Breathe Again, Niki Hardy not only does so in a way that is honest, but also funny, encouraging, and faith inspiring. Using personal stories of her rectal cancer journey and the loss of her mom and sister, the author is candid about her struggles, while at the same time, proving that the hope of Christ defeats the pain of this world. If your heart is beat up and bruised, if you’re facing an awful diagnosis or terrible grief, Hardy’s book is a breath of fresh air that will buoy your spirits and inspire your faith. Breathe again should be on your reading list if you’ve faced hard times and want to thrive instead of just survive. Bonus: The author includes stories of other “thrivers” who have faced massive pain and hardship, as well as journaling questions and a thriver’s manifesto. This book is for anyone who feels like life has given them a raw deal and who wants to not just survive the journey, but learn to grasp on to a full, abundant life.

Niki's book is a refreshing take on seasons of suffering. Her transparency and vulnerability in her story was a gift. Anyone who is experiencing a hard season of life (cancer or otherwise) can find encouragement and strength from reading this book. She shares so much of her own experiences, but also weaves in wisdom and encouraging words that will make you walk away changed from reading this book. Thank you, Niki, for sharing your story!

Niki has an amazing story of hope, despite losing her mom and sister to cancer and then getting her own cancer diagnosis. This book is a reminder that we are never alone - even in our suffering. Niki has a unique storytelling voice and incorporates humor and practical tips along the way. This book is a reminder that God designed us not just to survive but to thrive.

This is an amazing book. Niki does an amazing job in making the reader feel comfortable going through their situations with her honest and raw emotions about hers. She encourages the reader to thrive and not just survive. She also provides the reader with additional resources, including the Thriver Manifesto. This book truly represents Niki’s heart and personality. I recommend this book for everyone who is going through a struggle, has gone through a struggle or will go through a struggle.

I usually beat around the bush but I’m going to come right out and say you should buy Niki Hardy’s book because life is just plain hard for most of us at one point or another. This book will help you see God’s goodness and beauty in the worst moments to the point that you may even learn to not just survive, but to thrive. I’m not dealing with a huge challenge at the moment (thank you Jesus), but I even noticed my perspective parenting an outside the box kind of kid has shifted quite a bit after one of Niki’s chapters. I’m thankful I got to read this book a little early, and I’m so stinking excited that it will be available to the rest of the great big wide world.

Niki Hardy found herself diagnosed with stage 4 rectal cancer only a short time after both her mother and sister had both died of cancer. She is a wife and mother, and even though she was (and is) a strong Christian she began questioning her faith. This book would be helpful for any person who is going through a difficult period in their lives, whether cancer or not. Hardy asks all of the hard questions that each person in that situation may feel and handles them with helpful, Biblical and empathetic answers. Each chapter concludes with a prayer and an application section. I greatly enjoyed this book and I think it would be a great help to any Christian going through a tough time. This quote from the book's introduction, best sums it up: "At the heart of this book is my encouragement that thriving--living the full abundant life God has for us--is possible right in the middle of our heartache, tragedy, and yearning."

This book was beautifully written and full of hope, faith and encouragement. Hardy shares her story of loss, grief and overcoming rectal cancer. The book is broken into three parts (Finding Solid Ground, Learning To Breathe Again, Keep Calm and Breathe On) and has questions at the end of each chapter for further personal reflection. The conclusion of the chapter also provides one point of the Thriver's Manifesto, a rally cry put together near the end of the book. Hardy shares with readers her life through the years as she loses her mom and sister to cancer, plodding through grief while ministering to others as a pastor's wife and speaker. Hardy then hears after a routine colonoscopy that she has rectal cancer. As this journey commences, she begins to examine the way she deals with difficult times in her life and is eventually able to use her experiences to spread hope to those facing impossible issues. Hardy is a hilarious, honest writer who not only faces things that many would not want to talk about, but owns them, reminding the reader that facing tough times with hope is all about perspective. She bravely shares her fears, failures, triumphs and grief as she fights for her life. One of my favorite quotes from the first portion was this: "We endure, we survive, and we forget to look for joy in the midst of deep grief or intimacy in a season of loneliness." As the book progresses, Hardy brings in other people who have faced giants in their lives and overcome. Hearing their stories continues to bring the reader closer to understanding how grief, struggle and pain can exist in the same space as laughter, strength and hope. That's one of the most amazing things about this book--the tension as well as levity Hardy brings. I found myself laughing one time, crying the next. The 7th chapter (Be Vulnerable) with Ali's story in it was deeply affecting for me. Hardy is the type you'd love to glean from in person, share a cup of tea with. Her personality shines through each chapter of the book. This British powerhouse unleashes the power of faith in "Breathe Again," leading the readers through the mountains and valleys while holding tight to their hands. She will challenge you, call you out of the dark and walk alongside you as you move forward to find hope amidst difficult circumstances. That's the kind of friend we all could use in our lives. I read an early review copy thanks to Revell, Baker Publishing Group and #NetGalley. I chose to review and all opinions are my own.

Ten years ago my life fell apart. My first child died of a fatal condition when she was one month old and two weeks later my dad died of cancer. I wish I had had a book like Breathe Again to read in the year following my losses. If you feel like your life has fallen apart and you’re desperate to figure out how to live well and breathe again, Niki Hardy delivers the truth and encouragement you need for the journey. Personally vulnerable, honestly brave, Niki writes with a hint of wit and humor that provides the comic relief we all need that reminds us to breathe even as we turn the page. Whether you relate to a cancer diagnosis or some other version of unexpected hard, Niki’s book will speak to you. Niki tells her personal stories and those of others whose lives seemed to have fallen apart in different ways. To weave everything together, Niki shares biblical stories, truth, and hope that you will be able to draw from and relate to and will bring you to freedom and healing in your own story. Although I’m a decade past my life falling apart, Niki’s book was still like a breath of fresh healing air that I just wanted to keep breathing in. Breathe Again is like the wise, uplifting friend we all need, who knows when to speak truth, how to acknowledge the pain and questions and struggles that come, how to nudge you forward, and when to make you chuckle. Let Niki help you learn how to THRIVE no matter where you are in your journey. I think I will use the THRIVE manifesto included for years to come!

So life isn’t easy. And sometimes it’s really hard. Author Niki Hardy gets that. Hardy encourages us to look at the lies we are believing and replace them with God’s truth. It’s the only way to get through the hard stuff. I really like that Hardy is open and honest. No Christianese and some tough language (not bad language, but she doesn’t cut us any slack either). Her vulnerability helped me to look at my “junk” and how I was viewing it and myself. And then what to do about it. She didn’t leave me hanging but held out hope As Hardy says, “Life doesn't have to be pain-free to be full”. In the midst of pain you can not only survive, but you can thrive and live the life God means for you to live. If you’re not in the midst of something painful right now, you will be someday and should be prepared. Grab a copy of Breathe Again. I know I’ll be reading it again. I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.

Completely blessed by this book! After walking through one of the hardest seasons of my life last winter, I literally feel like I am breathing again. God’s timing of placing such a needed encouragement in my life is astounding. Niki is no stranger to trauma and suffering. She takes us through her story and the stories of others to not only give us a sense of camaraderie in our suffering, but to give us truths and tangible practices to hang on to as we are tempted to wallow because of the hand we have been dealt. She is raw, but also tempers it with humor. I both cried and laughed as I read this book. I would recommend this book to anyone feeling hopeless in their current sufferings. I don’t doubt that the pages of Niki’s book will leave you feeling hopeful again and maybe even a little brave. “Choosing brave isn’t always big, but it is always intentional, and as we move ahead with intention, secure God is with us, we can steer ourselves into the abundance he has waiting for us.” - Niki Hardy

This book was a game changer! I was challenged to keep moving forward, keep living life to my fullest, and know that life doesn't have to be perfect to be full. I can thrive not just survive! I was challenged to identify the lies I believe about myself and replace them with what God's word says I am. I would recommend this book to anyone who has faced or who is in the middle of a challenge to pick up this book. It will keep you inspired to keep moving forward one day at a time.
