Just a year after the release of their excellent
Bread, globally influenced duo
Sofi Tukker fully committed to their love of Brazilian culture with a reimagined companion set, aptly titled
butter. Transforming the ten songs from the original album and adding a trio of tracks, this new vision is as smooth and satisfying as the title suggests, toning down the raucous energy and electronic-dance jolts of
Bread with samba, bossa nova, funk, carimbó, and more. It's the relaxing lounge sibling to the late-night club kid, or the comedown after the big rager. The pounding "Throw Some Ass" becomes a bittersweet, tender moment of contemplation, while highlight track "Woof" is tamed. The festival-sized 2023 single "Veneno" is similarly subdued -- one of three new additions to this era alongside "Intensity" with Brazilian singer/songwriter
Liniker and an "Acoustic Bossa Version" of
the Knocks' collaboration "Brazilian Soul."
Seu Jorge also guests on the new version of "Bread." Since
Bread still exists in all its upbeat, electrified glory,
butter can be enjoyed for what it is: a gorgeous, comforting alternative that brings as much satisfaction -- just to a different kind of party. ~ Neil Z. Yeung
