“Thrills And Suspense Keeps The Reader Turning The Pages.” Bailey Saunders’ world suddenly comes to a jarring stop. The mother she’s known all her 29 years dies, and a stranger shows up telling her she’s not who she thinks she is. If that wasn’t enough, it appears someone is trying to kill her, and the stranger keeps showing up wanting to explain things. But Bailey has always made her own decisions, and doesn’t trust anyone. She’s determined to find out what’s going on, if it kills her – and it just might, if she doesn’t stop to think things through. But that’s not her style, and we are led on a merry-go-round chase of danger and intrigue as she runs for her life Maggie Thom keeps the suspense thick and heavy, as we follow Bailey’s plight. It all started 29 years ago, when baby Cassidy LeFevre was kidnapped from the hospital, then disappeared. The baby’s grandmother had seen a newspaper report of a girl bearing the likeness of Cassidy’s mother, and hires Guy Turner of Knights Associates to investigate the girl’s background, in case she’s her missing granddaughter. But someone else thinks that baby Cassidy has surfaced again after 29 years, and wants her dead. Many secrets start to unfold, and Knights Associates can’t believe how deep they tie into the baby’s family, but could there be a hidden killer in the family closet, or does it involve Bailey’s mother, and how deep? And will Bailey live to see those answers revealed? As a mystery lover, I couldn’t put the book down. The author captured me with her writing style, and the characters carried me away. Every time Bailey took off alone, I was on the edge of the chair. Didn’t she know someone was hiding in the dark? Would she live to the next chapter? Yes, it’s one of those kinds of stories. The kind of mystery that makes me want to read more. I’m already looking forward to Maggie Thom’s next thriller. Highly recommended.

Reviewed by Patricia Day for Readers' Favorite In Captured Lies: Book One of The Caspian Wine Series written by Maggie Thom, Bailey was successful in her adult life. This was a far cry from her pitiful childhood, which mostly consisted of constantly moving from house to house, town to town. All her memories are of running, hiding, begging, and being fearful. She does not recall too much joy in her younger days, and prefers not to dwell on those painfully difficult memories. Now she has control of her own destiny and success has not been easily attained. When her mother dies, Bailey’s life is completely turned upside-down and she finds herself under the scrutiny of someone intent on ending her life. Why?Geoffrey and Mr. Lund, as well as Guy, are the obvious protagonists and Bailey is placed in the unenviable position of having to trust one or all, but is that wise? A photograph appears to hold the key to discovering her identity and her elusive past. When she is informed that her real name is Cassidy, it begins an exploration into who she really is, and why her life is filled with secrets. Murderous intent and kidnapping turn her life into a nightmare. Questions grow and so does the pace of this excellent story. Discovering her mysterious past, and why she grew up under an assumed identity, blow her relatively quiet life into complete disarray and horror. Join Bailey, or is it Cassidy, on her quest to solve the puzzle. You’ll find yourself turning pages quickly to keep up with the race against time. Excellent read. I highly recommend it.

this is probably my favorite genre and I read a lot of books in it, so to be perfectly honest it takes a lot to really impress me. And Even though perhaps some of the elements in this book were a bit familiar, I appreciated the way that the author Maggie Thom breathed a new life into some familiar themes and tropes and made the story fresh and all her own. The characters were quirky, and even some things I thought I had figured out I was wrong about (no spoilers). For me a good suspense novel is one that does just that… keeps me guessing and in suspense. And this one did that in spades.

From the opening pages of “Captured Lies” I knew it would be different from the books I’ve been reading lately and I was right! Maggie Thom wastes no time in setting up the action in a scene that will take nearly to whole book to get to the bottom of! She carefully plots characterizations in a way that not only pulls us in and makes us care about Baily’s life, but makes us feel like we are right there going through it too. I truly cared about the characters’ fates, and was shocked and saddened at certain things…An interesting and diverse cast of characters, along with complex and intriguing sub plots made this a great read for me. Highly recommend. On to the next!

this book by Maggie Thom was terrific! Once I started reading I didn’t want to stop until I’d finished the whole thing. It pulls you in from the beginning, and I enjoyed the author’s “voice” and style of writing. The complex, interweaving plotlines were well-developed and not predictable, and I liked the brisk dialogue between the characters that moved the plot forward at an addicting speed. The characters were all interesting and well-written, and although there were some grammatical and punctuation errors, it wasn’t anything that really bothered me. I’d love to read more from Maggie Thom in the future!

I really loved this book, “Captured Lies”. I thought it was excellently written (a few minor editing things but nothing too major) and kept my attention from the dramatic opening to the satisfying end. At times I wondered how all the pieces would fall into place as I was continually trying to figure out what was really going on… love when a book does that to me! I was genuinely surprised at a few things that happened, and thought the continued, building tension and narrative was great. Can’t wait to read more in this series. Definitely recommend reading for fans of suspense, drama, even some romance.

Captured Lies (Book #1 in the Caspian Wine Series) is one of the most original and well-crafted suspense novels I’ve read in a long time! I was completely drawn in from the get-go, (even though that opening scene is basically my worst nightmare) and loved the way Maggie Thom writes with enough descriptions and details to fully develop the scenes and the storyline, but not so much where it slows down the pace at all. (Liked the minimalist use of dialogue tags!) Interesting characters and unpredictable twists… enjoyed being on the journey with Baily as she hunts down the truths behind her life of lies. A must read for fans of thrillers/suspense.

4.5 stars.... I loved the creative and strong characters and plots that continued to build and shock and surprise. Just when you think you know what’s happening, something comes along to throw a wrench in it. I enjoyed the brisk pace and the descriptive details that really brought the story to life. Sometimes I feel a bit like I have ADD when I read books, thinking “Okay, bored now” and putting it down never to pick back up, but with “Captured Lies” I had a hard time finding a place to even stop reading for the night… just wanted to keep going ‘til the end! Happy to see that this author has more books in this series with these characters… Will be interested in seeing where this series and our leads go to in the next one. Recommend for anyone (adults) who enjoy a well-written, action packed suspense novel with unexpected twists.

The mystery, action, and inevitable pairing of Bailey and Guy, makes for a fun read for any mystery buff. Thom has a descriptive style of writing, playing well into the gamut of emotions Bailey feels upon the death of her "mother". I especially like the multiple characters and plot twists Thom weaves into the story, and the ending leaves the reader satisfied on the outcomes for Bailey and Guy. Captured Lies is a wonderful read! From the very beginning Maggie Thom’s book took me on an awesome roller coaster ride. Bailey is a woman who has been forced to live without forming a relationship with anyone. When Bailey finds herself faced with burying her mother and meeting Guy who may help her find the truth, her action packed journey begins. Thom fills the story with such an array of characters that the plot can’t help but thicken and the web of deceit seems to encompass everybody.  I really enjoyed how Bailey had to decipher clues, hidden messages and being kidnapped in order to finally learn the truth. She’s a heroine everyone will cheer for with a story that sucks you in.  Captured Lies is suspense at its best keeping you on the edge of your seat and your fingers glued to the pages until the very end.

What would you do if you found out your life was a total lie? Bailey Saunders is about to find out. Captured Lies had my attention from the very beginning, with a newspaper article dated February 14, 1983. With that said, I had high expectations for this book. The first chapter was amazing. I have to admit I'm a little torn as to my feelings for this book. At times, I think there was information put in that wasn't needed. At the same time, the book left me wanting more. Bailey Saunders, aka Cassidy Lefevre, was kidnapped from Gracefield Hospital when she was only two days old. While reading this book, I became more and more impressed with Bailey as the story went on. Bailey/Cassidy is a survivor in EVERY sense of the word. Due to people in her life that she don't even know, she shouldn't have even been born. As an infant, she even escaped death. Born into a life of privilege, she grew up with barely enough to survive. At a young age, she became streetsmart, a skill she will need to survive now and find out why people want her dead. Guy Turner is a private investigator/former cop hired by his step-grandmother, Dorothea Lindell, to locate Cassidy. Guy, who has a dark past of his own, isn't truly Dorothea's grandchild, but was taken in by her because she knew his mother and grandmother. Dorothea is the true grandmother of Cassidy/Bailey. In the twenty-nine years since Cassidy's disappearance, Dorothea has never stopped looking for her only grandchild. Unfortunately, Dorothea's desire to find Cassidy and Guy's asking of questions, endangers Bailey/Cassidy's life. It appears some secrets are better left unknown and several people want Bailey dead before those secrets are brought to light. The list of suspects is a little long. The tangled web that surrounds this story is unbelievable. Ms. Thom did a great job in that respect. I literally had to write information down on a piece of paper to keep up with everything. Looking back, it might have been possible to figure out who was behind Cassidy's initial kidnapping, but the question of why wasn't answered until almost the end. Captured Lies is a story full of surprises. You get introduced to some pretty bad characters. I mean people that nightmares are made of. The story has violent moments with physical abuse and hints of sexual abuse. There is a mini romance, but there isn't a lot of detail; it's pretty much left to your imagination. I loved that Maggie included a little humorous dialog between Bailey and Guy as a way to break up all of the tension going on in the book. What I didn't like about the book was that I felt it was missing closure. I don't know if this is part of a series. Part of me hopes it isn't because I feel Bailey/Cassidy has already endured WAY too much. Would I read Maggie Thom? The answer to that question is a definite yes. I really enjoyed this story. It was a non stop adventure with Bailey as she travels to discover who she is. It all starts when she comes home to bury her mother. This is the first house and location that her mom stayed in for as long as she did. Her mom left her clues, but clues to what she isnt sure. At the same time, Guy is trying to talk to her about who he claims she is. Which is completely different than anything she has ever known. But before he can even tell her much, there are people after her trying to keep her from this knowledge, not only of who she is but what her mom was trying to tell her as well. There are a lot of characters thrown at you in the beginning, but it all smooths out and you quickly learn who everyone is. All of which have their own agenda. Its a non stop ride as we follow Bailey and Guy across the country and though memories of her past to watch her find out the truth. It was a great story and really kept your attention. I am really looking forward to reading more from this author.
