About the Author

Susan Stockdale began her art career as a textile designer for the apparel industry, providing her an opportunity to express her love of pattern and color. Today, pattern and color remain central to her work as the author and illustrator of critically acclaimed picture books that celebrate nature. Her books have won a variety of awards including the ALSC Notable Children's Book, NCTE Notable Children's Books in the Language Arts, NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K–12, and the Bank Street College of Education Best Children's Books of the Year. Susan lives in Maryland with her husband and is a popular speaker at schools and conferences.

PreS-K-Accompanied by minimal text, Stockdale's colorful acrylic illustrations fill the pages, showing the many different ways in which animals carry their young. The artist uses slight gradations in color to show movement, such as in the greens of the jungle leaves or in the white and ivory for penguins on the ice and snow. As the book concludes, readers see a human mother hugging her child "safe and snug, the way your mother carried you," creating a comforting final image. The last spread contains the names of the animals portrayed and where they live. A beautifully sweet look at how babies are carried, from insects and birds, to mammals and fish, and ultimately to how your own mother carried you. The first half of the text focuses on opposites, while the second portion highlights similarities. Giant anteaters carry their babies on their backs, while baboon babies cling to their moms' bellies. Coyotes, American alligators, and African Cichlids (a fish) all use their mouths to carry their young. While the pictures are not labeled, a two-page afterword shows a thumbnail of the illustration and lists the animals featured as well as where they live. A bibliography is also included. The illustrations are perfect for young readers. Featuring simple lines and vibrant colors, they complement the text by focusing on the interaction between the parent and child.
