Sounding amused, the king asks, "Were you attempting to steal one of my jeweled eggs?" 

I wince. Instead of directly answering his question, I repeat, "Please have mercy on a pitiful subject like me, your majesty!" Maybe if I suck up hard enough, I'll end up going to prison for only three years. 

"Stand up," he says. 

Because he's the freaking king, I have no choice but to obey. My legs tremble as I lift myself off the floor. 

He raises his hand, and I flinch, expecting a slap. However, he only strokes my cheek, his gentle touch belying his powerful muscular body. 

"You are a lovely thing," he murmurs. A rakishly handsome smirk breaks out across his face. "Much too lovely for prison."
