Matthew Arnold (1822 -1888) was an English poet, and cultural critic. Arnold was a sage writer chastising his reader on various social issues. When Arnold wanted to marry he took the job of school inspector. He described this job as drudgery. Because of his job he knew the provincial culture of England better than any of his contemporaries.
