Overview

The baby-sitters are back in their fourth graphic novel! Claudia and her sister, Janine, may as well be from two different planets. Claudia, who pays more attention to her art than her grades, feels she can't compete with her perfect sister. Janine studies nonstop, makes straight As, and even takes college-level courses. The girls are nothing alike, and they can't agree on anything. While Janine devotes all her time to working on her Web site, The Baby-sitters Club is busy with their new summer play group. But when something terrible happens to their grandmother, Mimi, the two sisters discover they're more alike than they originally thought.

I have all four of the graphic novels of the Babysitter's Club, and I love the way the characters are brought to life. I have always loved this series, and the graphic novels have a way of making the series even better. If you want to get a non book lover into the BSC, these books are a great way to start. I love them!

Poor Claudia!! She has her "perfect" sister's footsteps to follow. However, Janine secretly wishes she could be more artsy and carefree like Claudia. This is a very realistic story of how sisters interact. When I was a tween I read the entire Babysitters Club series. I learned how to deal with all kinds of problem children, crazy things that can occur while babysitting, and how to be more organized. The Babysitters Club taught me all about "Kid Kits" and accurately show how girls interact with each other. The characters and their situations are very realistic. The family settings mirror your own. The girls are totally likeable and it is amazing to me that the author could come up with all kinds of scenarios. These books inspired me when I was learning to babysit.

Ann M. Martin¿s popular 1980¿s series The Baby-Sitters Club has a new life in the graphic novel adaptations by Raina Telgemeier, as we see in Claudia and Mean Janine. Telgemeier faithfully translates Martin¿s books into the new format without compromising the characters and plot that are familiar to readers of the originals. Claudia and Mean Janine presents a summer in the life of the Baby-Sitters Club through the eyes of Claudia Kishi, the artistically-inclined, academically underachieving youngest child in a family of intellectuals. Claudia and her computer-genius sister Janine are at odds because each believes that the other is favored by the rest of the family, and the situation only worsens when their beloved grandmother Mimi has a stroke and must be nursed back to health. A subplot about the Baby-Sitters Club¿s summer adventure running a playgroup helps to lighten the sometimes grim tale. Themes of sibling rivalry and loyalty will be familiar to many readers, and the simple but expressive illustrations integrate with the text to tell a unified story. This format will make the books accessible to a wider audience, including reluctant readers and younger children, and will help bring girls into the boy-dominated graphic novel world. Recommended for ages 8+.
