Description: This book is designed to help clinicians choose the most informative imaging studies for their patients when faced with many overlapping imaging possibilities.
Purpose: The preface clearly states the situation, "one should only request studies...when there is reason to believe that the result will affect patient management." This book then presents practice guidelines depending on the clinical question to be answered.
Audience: The audience is clinicians at all levels of training and experience. Imaging studies are changing rapidly and dramatically in number and utility. As such, experienced attending physicians need updating as much as physicians-in-training need the initial training in requesting the correct image modality.
Features: The book takes an organ system approach, i.e. the physiology in addition to the anatomy rather than simply imaging a body part. An overview of imaging modalities and contrast agents is followed by neurological imaging, cardiothoracic imaging, breast imaging, abdominal imaging, musculoskeletal imaging and vascular imaging. Each chapter looks at specific issues of the area in question and has bulleted tables detailing which images could be requested and the advantages or disadvantages of each. There are also intuitive algorithms to help choose a particular modality.
