Overview

Courage to Heal by Paul Bernstein

Kaiser Permanente began at the height of the Great Depression with a 12 bed hospital in the Mojave Desert. When Sidney R. Garfield, MD, saw thousands of men building the Los Angeles Aqueduct, he saw an opportunity to provide health care for those workers. This novel is based on the true story of how Garfield, along with industrialist Henry Kaiser, changed the face of American medicine.

Courage to Heal by Paul Bernstein is all about how one doctor was able to change the world of medicine and healthcare. It discusses how Kaiser Permanente came to be. It was written in the point of view of Sidney R. Garfield the leading character who dreams of a hospital where he can provide good health care to all and not only those that can afford it. It all started when Doctor Garfield witnessed his mother’s death that could have been prevented had a doctor not refused to treat her because she had no money to pay. The story follows Doctor Garfield through the beginning from his mother’s death, to being kicked out of school for saving a man’s life, his first and only love, his first hospital, even his first war. It shows Doctor Garfield’s determination to prevent patients form getting sick even though the AMA is trying so hard to stop him. It shows medicine at its best and at its worst. It shows how one man really can make a difference, and that change so significant will take time and effort.

This should be a must read for all of us during these healthcare crisis days. I am so proud to work for Kaiser Permanente and feel, with all my heart, that WE are the answer.
